Does the Interval Between Hysterectomy and Start of Adjuvant Radiation Treatment Influence Survival in Women With Endometrial Carcinoma?: A National Cancer Database analysis
Conclusion: Our study suggests that TI between hysterectomy and initiation of ART was not an independent predictor of OS in women with early stage EC. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Oncology)

“Was It Worth It?”: A Pilot Study in Patient Perspectives on the Worthwhileness of Radiation Therapy
Conclusions: The r-WIWI survey was feasible to administer and most patients reported treatment being worthwhile on the last day of treatment and at first follow-up. Morning treatment times and longer treatment duration as measured in elapsed days were predictive of higher satisfaction in this pilot study. A broader study of factors associated with patient satisfaction with radiotherapy using the r-WIWI is indicated. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Impact of Pain, Opioids, and the Mu-opioid Receptor on Progression and Survival in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer
We examined the impact of pain, opioid use, and the mu-opioid receptor (MOP-R) expression in tumor tissue on progression-free survival and overall survival of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer. Methods: We identified 103 patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma receiving chemotherapy and abstracted data from Tumor Registry, in addition to pain, opioid exposure, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 values, survival, and imaging response. MOP-R expression was evaluated using an immunohistochemistry assay. The association of variables with progression-free survival and overall survival was analyzed in univariate an...

Survival Benefit of Combination Chemotherapy in Elderly Patients With Metastatic Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma
Objectives: Survival benefit of combination over single-agent chemotherapy for metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) was demonstrated in younger patients in clinical trials. The authors aimed to evaluate whether this survival benefit of combination chemotherapy is present in elderly patients with metastatic PDAC. Materials and Methods: The authors identified elderly patients (age 65 y or older) with stage IV PDAC and extracted available clinical information from a prospectively maintained institutional pancreatic cancer registry from 2007 to 2016. The primary endpoint was overall survival. Cox proportio...

Analyzing the Time From Discovery to Definitive Surgical Therapy for Lung Cancer Based on Referral Patterns
Conclusions: When comparing time from CT detection of a lung nodule to surgery, no significant difference was found between patients sent to nonthoracic specialists first and those referred directly to a thoracic surgeon. There was a significant decrease in time from CT to surgery for patients with private insurance compared with Medicare/Medicaid. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Effectiveness and Safety of Reirradiation With Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy of Lung Cancer After a First Course of Thoracic Radiation: A Meta-analysis
Conclusions: Re-SABR produces satisfactory LC and OS rates with an acceptable rate of toxicity. The balancing between the re-SABR dose and the tumor location has the potential to reduce severe and fatal toxicity. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Oncology)

The Effect of Systemic Chemotherapy on Survival in Patients With Localized, Regional, or Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder
Objectives: To test the effect of systemic chemotherapy on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in patients with adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder (ADKUB). Materials and Methods: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry (2004 to 2016), we identified patients with localized (T2-3N0M0), regional (T4N0M0/TanyN1-3M0), and metastatic (TanyNanyM1) ADKUB. Temporal trends, Kaplan-Meier plots, and multivariable Cox regression models were used before and after 1:1 propensity score matching and inverse probability of treatment weighting. Results: Of 1537 patients with ADKUB, 834 (54.0%), 363 (23.5%), and...

Eligibility Criteria and Endpoints in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Trials
Conclusions: Key eligibility criteria were somewhat inconsistent across the phase 3 mRCC trials studied. Endpoints in the newer trials did not align with DATECAN’s recommendations. Not only is greater standardization needed to facilitate meta-analyses and cross-trial comparisons, but as evident from lack of adherence to DATECAN’s recommendations, greater promotion and adoption of recommendations are needed to better harmonize trial design. Characterizing Urban-Rural Differences in Colon Cancer Outcomes: A Population-based Analysis Based on Travel Distance to Cancer Center
Objective: We aimed to explore possible drivers for urban-rural disparities in colon cancer outcomes in a single-payer health care system where all patients had access to universal health care coverage. Methods: Patients diagnosed with stage II/III colon cancer between 2004 and 2015 in Alberta, Canada were reviewed. On the basis of postal code, patients were categorized as living in urban, rural, or suburban areas based on travel distance to the cancer center. Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox regression models assessed the associations among the area of residence, receipt of treatment, and overall survival (OS). Results:...

Stage-specific Conditional Survival Among Young (Age Below 50 y) Versus Older (Age 50 y and Above) Adults With Colorectal Cancer in the United States
Conclusions: Prognosis for CRC improves over time for all patients, although the increase in survival appears to be less for young than older adults. Up to 10 years after diagnosis, the primary cause of death in young adults with CRC remains their incident cancer. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Oncology)
