Challenges With Manual-Based Multimodal Psychotherapy for People With Alzheimers Disease: A Case Study
Earlier detection of dementia requires increased knowledge of how to help people in the early stages of dementia. However, few studies have focused on how psychotherapy should be adapted to improve the outcome of therapy for people with Alzheimer’s disease. The aims of the present study were to identify and to explore possible obstacles encountered during the use of manual-based psychotherapy for people with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that individual adaptations to the treatment manual were necessary, particularly the modification of memory aids in order to adapt them to patients’ fu...

Uric Acid and the Risk of Alzheimers Disease: Is There an Association?
The objective of this study was to validate whether or not uric acid is indeed associated with AD. We compared different prospective studies and ultimately found that it is also a controversial issue. Further higher quality prospective evidence on the relationship between uric acid and AD in different age stage are needed to determine the causal association and its exact pathogenetic mechanisms. Computer-Aided Diagnosis System for Alzheimers Disease Using Different Discrete Transform Techniques
This article presents a proposed computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for extracting the most effective and significant features of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using these different discrete transform techniques and MFCC techniques. Linear support vector machine has been used as a classifier in this article. Experimental results conclude that the proposed CAD system using MFCC technique for AD recognition has a great improvement for the system performance with small number of significant extracted features, as compared with the CAD system based on DCT, DST, DWT, and the hybrid combination methods of the different trans...

DNMT3A rs1550117 Polymorphism is Associated With Late-Onset Alzheimers Disease in a Chinese Population
In this study, the rs1550117 polymorphism of DNMT3A was determined by polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism and confirmed by sequencing. The results showed that AA genotype carriers had a 2.08-fold risk of developing LOAD in comparison with GG genotype carriers (odds ratio [OR] = 2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-4.21, P = .038) and had a 2.05-fold risk for LOAD compared with GG+GA genotype carriers (OR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.03-4.11, P = .038), indicating that the DNMT3A polymorphism supports a major role in the pathogenesis of LOAD and can be used as a stratification marker to predict an in...

Cognitive Efficacy (SIB) of 13.3 Versus 4.6 mg/24 h Rivastigmine Patch in Severe Alzheimers Disease
The objective of this retrospective analysis was to further examine the cognitive efficacy of 13.3 versus 4.6 mg/24 h rivastigmine patch on individual SIB items, and SIB domains derived using factor analysis of these items. Change from baseline at Week 24 on 9 new factor-defined domains and individual items was calculated and compared using effect sizes (Cohen’s d). Numerically less decline was observed with 13.3 versus 4.6 mg/24 h patch on all domains and the majority of individual items. Largest least squares mean treatment differences were observed on "visuospatial reasoning," "object naming," "recognition," "desi...

Synthesis of 9-Aminoacridine Derivatives as Anti-Alzheimer Agents
In the present study, some 9-aminoacridine derivatives have been synthesized by condensation of 9-aminoacridine with substituted phenacyl, benzoyl, and benzyl halides (RM1-RM6). Compounds were investigated for acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition potential, considering these enzymes playing a key role in Alzheimer’s disease. All derivatives showed better inhibition of enzymes than the standard galantamine, whereas except RM4, all exhibit better results than tacrine, a well-known acridine derivative used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Gait Disorder in a Cohort of Patients With Mild and Moderate Alzheimers Disease
This study has important implications for public health and clinical practice. This study and previous studies have reported that abnormal gait predicts greater risk of falls, dementia, institutionalization, and death. The high prevalence and incidence of abnormal gait and its association with multiple adverse outcomes in older adults require urgent attention. Our results allow us to identify the risk factors. Mammillary Bodies in Alzheimers Disease: A Golgi and Electron Microscope Study
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by irreversible memory decline, concerning no rarely spatial memory and orientation, alterations of the mood and personality, gradual loss of motor skills, and substantial loss of capacities obtained by previous long education. We attempted to describe the morphological findings of the mammillary bodies in early cases of AD. Samples were processed for electron microscopy and silver impregnation techniques. The nuclei of the mammillary bodies demonstrated a substantial decrease in the neuronal population and marked abbreviation of dend...

Managing Loss and Change: Grief Interventions for Dementia Caregivers in a CBT-Based Trial
Dementia caregivers often experience loss and grief related to general caregiver burden, physical, and mental health problems. Through qualitative content analysis, this study analyzed intervention strategies applied by therapists in a randomized-controlled trial in Germany to assist caregivers in managing losses and associated emotions. Sequences from 61 therapy sessions that included interventions targeting grief, loss, and change were transcribed and analyzed. A category system was developed deductively, and the intercoder reliability was satisfactory. The identified grief intervention strategies were recognition and ac...

Diagnostic Profiles of Patients Differentially Failing Executive Functioning Measures
Conclusions: Executive dysfunction was observed in dementia-related diagnoses, and TMT failure was implicated in dementia in higher proportions than WCST impairment. Trail Making Test appears more sensitive than WCST for assessing executive impairment across diagnoses, especially when time and resources are limited in screening and clinical settings.
