Gut microbiota-derived secondary bile acids, bile acids receptor polymorphisms, and risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes: a cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: A higher proportion of unconjugated SBAs, especially DCA, is linearly associated with a higher risk of CVD among people with newly diagnosed T2D. Our findings support the potential role of gut microbiota-derived SBAs in cardiovascular health in individuals with T2D.PMID:38309826 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.08.023 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Adherence to the Planetary Health Diet Index and correlation with nutrients of public health concern: an analysis of NHANES 2003-2018
CONCLUSIONS: Although there have been positive changes over the past 20 y, there is substantial room for improving the health and sustainability of the United States diet. Shifting diets toward EAT-Lancet recommendations would improve nutrient adequacy for iron, fiber, and potassium. Policy action is needed to support healthier, more sustainable diets in the United States and globally.PMID:38309827 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.10.018 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Peak timing of slowest growth velocity among young children coincides with highest ambient temperatures in Burkina Faso: a longitudinal study
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that child health and development are more affected by high temperatures than by other aspects of climatic seasonality such as rainfall. Emerging shifts in climatic conditions will pose challenges to optimal growth, highlighting the importance of changes that optimize the timing of nutrition interventions and address environmental growth-limiting conditions.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02071563.PMID:38309828 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.09.021 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Exposure to Chinese famine in early life and height across 2 generations: a longitudinal study based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey
CONCLUSIONS: The findings support the intergenerational associations of famine exposure in early life with height in Chinese populations, indicating the public health significance of improving the nutritional status of mothers and children in the long run.PMID:38309830 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.10.021 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and their neutralizing capacity against live virus in human milk after COVID-19 infection and vaccination: prospective cohort studies
CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination (type and interval) impacted milk antibodies; however, antibody presence did not consistently predict live virus neutralization. Although human milk is unequivocally the best way to nourish infants, guidance on protection to infants following maternal infection/vaccination may require more nuanced messaging. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04453969 and NCT04453982.PMID:38309831 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.10.008 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

The effects of inulin-type fructans on cardiovascular disease risk factors: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSION: ITF may reduce low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and body weight. However, due to low to very low CoE, further well-designed and executed trials are needed to confirm these effects.PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42019136745.PMID:38309832 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.10.030 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Metabolomics of Ramadan fasting and associated risk of chronic diseases
CONCLUSIONS: Ramadan fasting is associated with short-term favorable changes in the metabolic profile concerning risk of some chronic diseases. These findings should be further investigated in future, larger studies of longer follow-up with clinical outcomes.PMID:38301826 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.01.019 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Temporal gut microbiota variability and association with dietary patterns: from the one-year observational DCH-NG MAX study
CONCLUSIONS: In the DCH-NG MAX, 39% of the genera had an ICC>0.5 over one year, suggesting that these genera could be studied with health outcomes in prospective analyses with acceptable precision. Adherence to the Nordic, Mediterranean, and plant-based diets differed between bacterial subgroups and was associated with higher abundance of genera with fiber-degrading properties. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains/cereals, and nuts were frequently associated with these genera.PMID:38301827 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.01.027 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Adaptation of nutritional risk screening tools may better predict response to nutritional treatment: a secondary analysis of the randomized controlled trial Effect of early nutritional therapy on Frailty, Functional Outcomes, and Recovery of malnourished medical inpatients Trial (EFFORT)
CONCLUSIONS: Adapting the NRS and MNA by including nutritional parameters only improves their ability to predict response to a nutrition intervention, but slightly reduces their overall prognostic performance. Scores dependent on disease severity may best be considered prognostic scores, whereas nutritional risk scores not including parameters reflecting disease severity may indeed improve a more personalized treatment approach for nourishment interventions. The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02517476.PMID:38290574 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.01.013 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Plant stanol consumption increases anti-COVID-19 antibody responses, independent of changes in serum cholesterol concentrations: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Consuming plant stanols (4 g/d) affects immune responses to COVID-19 vaccinations, translating into increased serum anti-COVID-19 IgM concentrations in subjects with overweight/obesity. Only in IgG seroconverted subjects, serum anti-COVID-19 IgG concentrations also increases. These effects are independent of reductions in LDL cholesterol. These results suggest that this high-risk group for COVID-19 complications could benefit from plant stanol consumption. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04844346.PMID:38278364 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.01.017 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Dietary patterns and their associations with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors in adult survivors of childhood cancer: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Unhealthy dietary patterns are prevalent in adult survivors of childhood cancer, especially those with lower socioeconomic status and racial minorities. Interventions to improve diet and health in childhood cancer survivors need to concurrently address disparities that contribute to adherence to healthy dietary practices. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00760656 (https://classic.CLINICALTRIALS: gov/ct2/show/NCT00760656).PMID:38278365 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.01.012 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)
