A new paradigm for addictions
ConclusionsThe above suggests a new paradigm for addictions. Pleasure provides temptations, hyperbolic discounting weakens the will. Habits emerge. Addictions seem to be a group of problems of its own kind, not diseases, because diseases do not bring about pleasure, and are not sought for pleasure. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

A 3-Year Retrospective Study of the Impact of Integrating an Addiction Liaison Team into an Outpatient Alcoholism Treatment Programme
Conclusionsintegrating the ALT into an outpatient programme facilitates an earlier detection and initiation of treatment during the hospital stay and the continuity of care. Alcohol misuse conditions affect the patient ’s prognosis and health outcomes, so appropriate care is needed. Inclusion in the programme was associated with less risk of hospital mortality, fewer readmissions and a lower LOS. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

Differential Response in Ethanol Behaviors of Female Rats Given Various Weight Loss Surgeries
ConclusionThese findings confirm reduced EtOH consumption by female SG rats as opposed to increased intake following RYGB, and provide the first experimental evidence that the remnant stomach in the RYGB procedure is contributory. Future studies in rats and humans are warranted to confirm that ghrelin plays a critical role in susceptibility to AUD development following WLS. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

Minimizing Assessments of Alcohol Advertising in the Six Nations Rugby Championship
Barkeret  al. (2021) are to be commended for their recent examination of alcohol advertising in the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Championship. Their second by second quantification of such advertising provides incontrovertible evidence of the pervasive nature of this association between alcohol advertising and sport. The sheer volume of alcohol advertising exposure that they note is staggering. The concern is that although they noted a total of 13,640  s (227.3 min or 3.8 h) of match screen time in which the word Guinness was visible, this is actually a significant underestimate of actual exposure to such advertising. (So...

Safety and Persistence of Nalmefene Treatment for Alcohol Dependence. Results from Two Post-authorisation Safety Studies
ConclusionsDespite the inclusion of a wider patient population (e.g. elderly patients and those with relevant co-morbidities), the safety and tolerability profile of nalmefene given in routine practice was consistent with previous clinical studies. The differing rates of persistence beyond 1 year likely reflect the different methodologies and highlight the relevance of psychosocial support at follow-up visits. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

Changes in the Gut Microbiota Following Bariatric Surgery Are Associated with Increased Alcohol Intake in a Female Rat Model
ConclusionsChanges in the taxonomic profile of the gut microbiota following bariatric surgery, particularly RYGB, are associated with increased EtOH intake and may contribute to increased alcohol use disorder risk through the gut-brain-microbiome axis. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

Understanding the Broader Impacts Of Alcohol Marketing: Time For a Research Agenda Which Includes Adults
AbstractMost research on alcohol marketing involves young people. Consequently, gaps remain in our understanding of how alcohol marketing reaches, engages and influences adults, who are the legitimate and primary targets for marketing communications. Responding to these lacunae in knowledge is necessary to help inform and evaluate population-level controls on alcohol marketing. (Source: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
