Performance of a Supervisor Observational Coding System and an Audit and Feedback Intervention
AbstractWorkplace-based clinical supervision is common in community based mental health care for youth and families and could be a leveraged to scale and improve the implementation of evidence-based treatment (EBTs). Accurate methods are needed to measure, monitor, and support supervisor performance with limited disruption to workflow. Audit and Feedback (A&F) interventions may offer some promise in this regard. The study —a randomized controlled trial with 60 clinical supervisors measured longitudinally for 7 months—had two parts: (1) psychometric evaluation of an observational coding system for measuring adherenc...

Participation in Individual Placement and Support in the Supported Employment Demonstration
AbstractIndividual placement and support (IPS) was the primary intervention in the United States Social Security Administration ’s supported employment demonstration (SED), a large randomized trial that sought to increase employment and reduce disability among those whose first application for disability benefits was denied. Researchers developed a measure of participation in IPS services to quantify participation among en rollees assigned to receive IPS. The IPS participation measure, which IPS teams completed monthly for individual clients, recorded clients assigned to IPS as being either out of contact with their IPS ...

Factors Influencing Attendees ’ Engagement with Group Psychoeducation: A Multi-stakeholder Perspective
AbstractFew studies have explored the problem of engagement in relation to group psychoeducation from a multi-site and multi-stakeholder perspective. The aim of the study was to explore the factors influencing service user and family engagement with group psychoeducation programmes. The study design was qualitative descriptive. Data were collected through individual and focus group interviews with key stakeholders (n  = 75) involved with the programme within 14 mental health sites in the Republic of Ireland. Enablers and barriers to engagement were identified at participant, provider, programme and organization level. ...

Lifespan service receipt and unmet needs among individuals on the autism spectrum
This study uses data from one of the largest statewide surveys conducted between 2017 and 2018 to compare service use and unmet needs among individuals on the autism spectrum across the lifespan. A statewide sample of 5792 caregivers of autistic children and adults were included in the study. Logistic regressions were conducted to compare service use and need among six age groups ranging from early childhood (0 –5 years) to later adulthood (31+) while adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. We found that the transition-age adult group (18–21 years) was less likely to receive services, including speech/language ...

Attitudes Towards Evidence-Based Practice of Professionals Working with Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Bangladesh
AbstractLike in many lower-middle-income countries (LMIC), progress in implementing evidence-based practices (EBPs) for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been slow in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study examined professionals ’ attitudes towards evidence-based practice (EBP) for children and adolescents with ASD and explored how providers’ demographic factors are related to attitudes to and adoption of EBPs in Bangladesh. The sample consisted of 150 mental health professionals and special teachers from the urban area of Dhaka. Attitudes were assessed by the Evidence-based Practice Attitude Scale-36. F...

The Complexity of Psychotropic Medication Prescription and Treating Trauma Among Youth in Foster Care: Perspectives from the Lived Experience
AbstractYouth in the US foster care system are disproportionately prescribed antipsychotic and psychotropic medication compared to youth not involved with foster care. Research on the relationship between experiences of trauma, mental health symptoms, evidence-based treatment, and safe psychotropic prescribing practices for youth in foster care is limited. We explored stakeholders ’ perspectives of the relationship between psychotropic medications and trauma informed care (TIC) for youth in foster care. We conducted semi-structured individual and group interviews with foster caregivers, caseworkers, prescribing clinician...

State Policies that Impact the Design of Children ’s Mental Health Services: A Modified Delphi Study
AbstractTo identify the state-level policies and policy domains that state policymakers and advocates perceive as most important for positively impacting the use of children ’s mental health services (CMHS). We used a modified Delphi technique (i.e., two rounds of questionnaires and an interview) during Spring 2021 to elicit perceptions among state mental health agency officials and advocates (n = 28) from twelve states on state policies that impact the use of CMH S. Participants rated a list of pre-specified policies on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = not important, 7 = extremely important) in the following pol...

WHO Participates in Effectiveness Research? A Comparison of Effectiveness Trial Clinicians to National Survey Samples
This study compared background characteristics, attitudes toward EBPs, and attitudes towards measurement-based care (MBC) among clinicians participating in a National Institute of Mental-Health (NIMH) funded effectiveness trial, the Community Study of Outcome Monitoring for Emotional Disorders in Teens (COMET), to clinician data from nationally representative U.S. survey samples. Results indicated COMET clinicians were significantly younger, less clinically experienced, and were more likely to have a training background in psychology versus other disciplines compared to national survey samples. After controlling for demogr...

Identifying Youth Problem Profiles and Predicting Remission Following Mental Health Treatment
This study utilized latent profile analysis to categorize youth served by a public mental health setting into homogenous classes. Then, associations between class membership and meeting clinical criteria by the latest assessment were examined. Caregiver responses to the Ohio Scales, Short Form, Problem Severity Scale for 1090 youth completed at entry into this public mental health system were subjected to latent profile analysis. This method classifies youth into categories based on mental health problem profiles, in order to determine the degree to which these groupings are related to later mental health outcomes. The cla...

“Change Doesn’t Happen by Itself”: A Thematic Analysis of First-Level Leaders’ Experiences Participating in the Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation (LOCI) Strategy
AbstractThe Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation (LOCI) strategy is a multifaceted implementation strategy that aims to support successful evidence-based practice (EBP) implementation by fostering effective general leadership, implementation leadership, and implementation climate. How implementation strategies are experienced by participants is important for their utilization and effectiveness in supporting EBP implementation. The current study is the first in-depth qualitative study exploring first-level leaders ’ experiences of participating in the LOCI strategy. Data were collected as part of a tria...

Patterns of Service Use in Intensive Case Management: A Six Year Longitudinal Study
AbstractAn Intensive Case Management (ICM) intervention has been developed in Lausanne, Switzerland. It aims to promote access to care for people with severe mental disorders who have difficulties to engage with mental health services because of the severity of their disorders and/or their marginality. ICM embrace components of assertive community treatment and critical time intervention. It is time limited and focused on critical phases of recovery. The goal of this study was to examine the heterogeneity of service use patterns of people who required ICM interventions and identify differences in patterns of duration and t...

Implementation of Evidence-Based Practices within Treatment-As-Usual and Evidence-Based Practice Initiatives
We examined EBP implementation in a treatment as usual (TAU) state and in six states with publicly funded EBP initiatives (EBPIs). In Study 1, we examined providers ’ use of practices derived from the evidence base (PDEB) and their predictors among 780 providers in a TAU state. In Study 2, we conducted a systematic review of implementation strategies, outcomes, and predictors of EBP use in six state funded EBPIs. Study 1 suggests TAU providers use PDEB alongs ide practices without consistent research support; provider racial/ethnic minority status, learning theory orientation, and manual use predict greater PDEB use. Stu...
