In vitro evaluation of the susceptibility of bacterial biofilms to Hecogenin Acetate
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 20:107157. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107157. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiofilms are a bacterial resistance strategy through which microorganisms organize themselves in the form of a colony fixed to a surface that is protected by a polymer matrix. Infectious diseases that result in biofilm formation have been considered a relevant public health problem due to the potential to increase patient morbidity and mortality, in addition to increasing the burden on health services. Such pathologies are treated with the use of antimicrobial drugs, the indiscriminate use of which has contributed to the pr...

Thinking green: insecticidal effect of biorational solutions against Triatoma pallidipennis Stal (Hemiptera: Triatominae)
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 19:107152. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107152. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe control of triatomine vectors depends almost exclusively on conventional insecticides. These compounds can, nevertheless, cause negative effects on environmental and human health as well as induce resistance in triatomines. Therefore, we need to look for more sustainable alternatives. Triatoma pallidipennis is one of the main chagasic vectors in Mexico. We evaluated the insecticidal effectiveness of two oils (neem and cinnamon), and two desiccants (potassium salts of fatty acids and diatomaceous earth), on 3rd instar ny...

Molecular characterization of Haemoproteus enucleator with emphasis on the host and geographic distribution
This study combined microscopic and molecular approaches to characterize Haemoproteus enucleator morphologically and molecularly. Blood samples were collected from the African pygmy kingfisher Ispidina picta in Cameroon, and the parasite was identified using morphological characters of gametocytes. The analysis of partial cytochrome b sequences (cytb) identified a new Haemoproteus lineage (hISPIC03), which was linked to the morphospecies H. enucleator. Illustrations of blood stages were provided and the phylogenetic analysis showed that the new lineage clustered with five other closely related lineages belonging to the sam...

Unveiling of the antileishmanial activities of Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanocomposite through its potent antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects
This study aimed to produce linalool loaded zinc oxide nanocomposite (LZNPs) and assess its in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial effects against Leishmania major. LZNPs was produced through the synthesis of an ethanolic solution containing polyvinyl alcohol. The average size of LZNPs was determined to be 105 nm. The findings indicated that LZNPs displayed significant (p<0.01) antileishmanial effects on promastigotes and amastigotes. Following exposure of promastigotes to LZNPs, there was a notable rise in the percentage of early and late apoptotic cells from 9.0-57.2%. The gene expression levels of iNOS, IFN-γ, and TNF...

Molecular phylogenetic analysis of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato infecting sheep in Italy
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 16;252:107151. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107151. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCystic Echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a neglected zoonosis still threatening public health worldwide. In Italy different epidemiological scenarios were reported depending on the geographical area and associated socio-economic activities. Although in northern Italy the occurrence of E. granulosus is considered sporadic, in the southern regions and, particularly in Sardinia, CE prevalence reaches high levels. We analysed CE cysts collected from infected sheep from ...

The involvement of cytokine gene polymorphism in determining the vulnerability to Blastocystis and Helicobacter pylori co-infection in the Egyptian population
CONCLUSION: SNPs (-1031 T/C and -308 G/A) of the TNF-α and (+3954 C/T) of the IL-1β may be a useful marker in the assessment of the risk of Blastocystis infection, and TNF-α at position -308 G/A) may be a predictor for co-infection of Blastocystis with H. pylori.PMID:38364930 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107137 (Source: Acta Tropica)

Aedes aegypti oviposition dynamics in towns with low human population density in yungas and dry chaco, Salta, Argentina
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 13:107150. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107150. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe assessed the presence of Aedes aegypti in five ecorregions of Salta province and compared the oviposition activity of Ae. aegypti using ovitraps in towns of two contrasting ecoregions (yungas and Chaco dry forests) in the province of Salta, Argentina, a major contrast in these ecoregions are rain patterns and altitude. Our aim was to estimate how oviposition activities were associated with the ecoregion and site scale local environmental variables. Mosquito oviposition activity was monitored weekly during the summer usin...

RNA interference of NADPHcytochrome P450 increased deltamethrin susceptibility in a resistant strain of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 13;252:107149. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107149. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe enzyme NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) plays a central role in cytochromes P450 activity. Gene expression analysis of cytochromes P450 and CPR in deltamethrin-resistant and susceptible populations revealed that P450s genes are involved in the development of insecticide resistance in Triatoma infestans. To clarify the role of cytochromes P450 in insecticide resistance, it was proposed to investigate the effect of CPR gene silencing by RNA interference (RNAi) in a pyrethroid resistant population of T. infestans....
