Detection of gastro ‐oesophageal reflux in the neonatal unit
Abstract AimTo determine whether a pH probe or multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) more frequently detected gastro‐oesophageal reflux and test the hypothesis that acid reflux was associated with lower baseline impedance. MethodsA prospective study of infants in whom reflux was suspected and evaluated using combined pH and multichannel impedance. Studies were considered abnormal if the acid index was>10% or there were> 79MII reflux events in 24 hours. The acid index was the percentage of total study time with a pH

Hypoglycaemia was common in acute gastroenteritis in a prospective hospital ‐based study but electrolyte imbalances were not
This study examined the relationship between the severity of acute gastroenteritis and blood test abnormalities. MethodsWe prospectively enrolled children under five years referred for outpatient or inpatient management for gastroenteritis from February 2014 to April 2016. The four study hospitals cared for 30% of Norwegian children. The severity of gastroenteritis was assessed using Vesikari scores. Blood samples were analysed at each hospital. ResultsThe 659 children had a median age of 19 months. The rotavirus was found in 314/514 children with stool samples (61%). Severe gastroenteritis, indicated by a Vesikari scores ...

Identification of risk for neonatal haemolysis
Abstract AimTo identify neonates at risk for haemolytic hyperbilirubinaemia through near‐concurrrent measurements of total serum/plasma bilirubin (TB) or transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) and end‐tidal breath carbon monoxide (CO), corrected for ambient CO (ETCOc), an index of bilirubin production and haemolysis. MethodsPaired TB/TcB (mg/dL) and ETCOc (ppm) measurements were obtained in newborns (n=283) at 20 to
