Prevalence and clinical implications of heterotopic ossification after distal biceps tendon repair
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):695-700. doi: 10.52628/89.4.12447.ABSTRACTComplete distal biceps tendon ruptures are relatively uncommon. Conservative treatment may result in persistent pain and weakness. Therefore, surgical repair is usually indicated in order to restore strength. Different surgical techniques and fixation methods have been described. The most reported complications after surgery are iatrogenic nerve damage, heterotopic ossification (HO) and re-rupture. Heterotopic ossification can be variable in size. Significant HO can limit range of motion while minor HO often remains asymptomatic. The overall presenc...

Surgical vs Non-surgical interventions for distal radius fractures: a quantitative analysis of Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation measures
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):701-708. doi: 10.52628/89.4.12408.ABSTRACTTrials to assess differences in PRWE (Patient Related Wrist Evaluation) over time, for both surgical and non-surgical interventions post DRFs (distal radius fractures) are rare. The DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) questionnaire has been shown to be improved by a greater margin in the medium term for surgical interventions, than non surgical interventions. However, a study found that PRWE can be considered superior to the DASH questionnaire for DRFs, due to greater specificity to wrist pain and function. Conflicting data makes it di...

Is the 'safe zone' identified in preoperative computed tomography helpful for choosing optimal implant for fixation of radial head fracture?
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):709-717. doi: 10.52628/89.4.11188.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to assess the clinical significance of the radiologic safe zone based on computed tomography and to compare the outcomes of three different implants for fixation of isolated radial head fractures. We retrospectively reviewed 367 patients who underwent internal fixation for isolated radial head fractures. We newly defined two subtypes of Mason type II fractures associated with the radiographic safe zone (IIA, two-part fracture allowing for safe fixation of plate; IIB, two-part fracture not allowing for safe fixation). 170...

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of post-operative drainage: pilot study
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):567-574. doi: 10.52628/89.4.9261.ABSTRACTSurgical drains can be placed after an operation to collect postoperative blood loss. However, these could be overestimated. Indeed, the fluid elapsed after the first postoperative day would no longer be pure blood. An early withdrawal of redon could then be considered. A monocentric prospective study of 25 patients undergoing total knee or primary hip replacement surgery, for osteo-arthritis, was conducted. Redon flow was evaluated in total volume and in composition by the sedimentation study. A qualitative analysis of the content of the redon was a...

Birmingham hip resurfacing: a systematic review of outcomes at minimum 10-years follow-up
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):581-586. doi: 10.52628/89.4.10045.ABSTRACTAlthough controversy surrounding the use of metal-on-metal (MoM) arthroplasty implants continues to exist, satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes have been reported following Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) at long-term follow-up, leading to an Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) rating of 13A. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to evaluate the functional outcomes, radiological outcomes and revision rates following BHR at a minimum of 10 years follow-up. Using the PRISMA guidelines, two independent r...

Evaluation of the native femoral neck and stem version reproducibility using robotic-arm assisted direct-anterior total hip arthroplasty
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):595-602. doi: 10.52628/89.4.10411.ABSTRACTThe intraoperative measurement of the femoral version (FV) has gained attention in wake of an optimised combined version (CV) philosophy. Whereas some data is available utilising different approaches, to our belief this study provides the first in vivo FV data in DA-THA using the MAKO™ robot. To improve the accuracy of the femoral stem version in DA-THA, we want to ask the following question: How effectively can we reproduce the native femoral version in DA- THA using the MAKO™ robot? The first 125 total hip cases through DAA with the use of the...

Distal femoral osteotomy for multidirectional malunion using 3D printing technology: a case-report
Acta Orthop Belg. 2023 Dec;89(4):609-612. doi: 10.52628/89.4.11912.ABSTRACTMultidirectional distal femoral malunion and limb shortening lead to functional deficit and decreased quality of life. A corrective osteotomy might be necessary to cope with these issues. The inception of computer-assisted planification and the introduction of patient-specific instrumentation based on 3D printing technology with personalized osteotomy guides provide high correction accuracy, effectiveness, time-saving, and reduce potential complications. The present study describes a case of correction osteotomy using this procedure in a young patie...
