Neuropsychological profile of a male psychiatric patient with a Morgagni-Stewart-Morel syndrome.
Authors: Hansen A, Engelhardt L, Pleschutznig W, Dammann G, Vietze S Abstract In 1765 Giovanni Morgagni described a syndrome consisting of hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI), obesity and hirsutism. In 1928 Stewart and in 1930 Morel added neuropsychiatric symptoms, e.g. depression and dementia, which led to the definition of the Morgagni-Stewart-Morel Syndrome (MSM). Although mostly women were characterized in literature no gender specifity is demanded. This case report presents the rare case of a 66 year old male psychiatric patient with Morgagni-Stewart-Morel Syndrome. The patient complained of loss of concentra...

Hoarding pet animals in obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Authors: Campos-Lima AL, Torres AR, Yücel M, Harrison BJ, Moll J, Ferreira GM, Fontenelle LF Abstract BACKGROUND: Although severe hoarding symptoms have been considered rare among obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) samples, the prevalence of animal hoarding in OCD is unknown. To help clarifying this issue, we searched for cases of animal hoarding among patients attending a university OCD clinic (n=420). METHODS: Chart review. RESULTS: Only two patients from our sample exhibited animal hoarding (

Agomelatine-induced liver injury in a patient with choledocholithiasis.

Relationship of oestrogen receptor status to depressive symptoms and quality of life in breast cancer patients.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that ER status, which is a well-known biological prognostic factor in breast cancer, may be related to the severity of certain aspects of depressive symptoms or QOL impairment, implying a role of the ER in affective and behavioural regulation. However, anti-oestrogen treatments significantly influence these relationships. PMID: 25287728 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Acta Neuropsychiatrica)

Functional recovery results from the risperidone long-acting injectable versus quetiapine relapse prevention trial (ConstaTRE).
Authors: Rouillon F, Eriksson L, Burba B, Raboch J, Kaprinis G, Schreiner A Abstract OBJECTIVE: ConstaTRE is an open-label, randomised, controlled, relapse prevention trial in patients with stable schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder switched to risperidone long-acting injectable (RLAI) or oral quetiapine, and was designed to test the hypothesis that injectable antipsychotic treatment with risperidone would be more effective than oral therapy with quetiapine. Here we report the functional recovery results from the ConstaTRE trial. METHODS: Clinically stable adults previously treated with oral risperidone, ...

Profiling spontaneous speech decline in Alzheimer's disease: a longitudinal study.
This study aims to document the nature and progression of spontaneous speech impairment suffered by patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) over a 12-month period, using both cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal design. METHODS: Thirty one mild-moderate AD patients and 30 controls matched for age and socio-cultural background completed a simple and complex oral description task at baseline. The AD patients then underwent follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months. RESULTS: Cross-sectional comparisons indicated that mild-moderate AD patients produced more word-finding delays (WFDs) and empty and indefinite phra...

A comparison of cognitive functioning in acute schizophrenia and depression.
CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that cognitive impairment is present in both disorders. Schizophrenic patients performed worse than patients with unipolar depression in only two of the administered tests. Differences in cognitive performance between the groups are not as general as often assumed. Therefore, during the acute phase of illness, a diagnostic classification on the grounds of the patients' neurocognitive performance has to be done with caution.
