Uromodulin - a link between sodium excretion and alteration in circadian blood pressure pattern in prehypertensives
Acta Clin Croat. 2023 Aug;62(2):313-322. doi: 10.20471/acc.2023.62.02.09.ABSTRACTAlthough changes in dietary sodium intake alter blood pressure (BP) in salt-sensitive individuals, pathophysiological mechanisms are still unknown. It has been reported that uromodulin is involved in sodium tubular transport, and genome-wide association studies pointed to UMOD gene as one of the most important gene candidates for arterial hypertension. Our aim was to analyze urinary uromodulin, salt intake and BP in 326 young middle-aged subjects (mean age 36±8 years, 49.4% male). In a subgroup of 175 individuals, ambulatory blood pressure mo...

Treatment of congenital laryngeal cysts in newborns
We present a case series of five neonates treated for congenital laryngeal cysts during the 2011-2017 period at our pediatric tertiary care hospital. Patient age ranged from one day to 14 days. All patients had unilateral cysts. After surgical excision, burning of the walls of the cysts was performed by a CO2 laser. In one case, after four months, a recurrent cyst appeared, and re-operation was performed. Our relatively small case series indicates that symptoms such as stridor and labored breathing can occur already during the first days of life and potentially endanger the patient's life. Complete excision of the cyst and...

Outcomes of surgical treatment for displaced both-column acetabular fractures
Acta Clin Croat. 2023 Apr;62(1):162-174. doi: 10.20471/acc.2023.62.01.19.ABSTRACTComplex both-column acetabulum fractures are severe injuries, often with associated injuries and complications with uncertain clinical and functional outcome. Modern traumatological protocols point to early surgical treatment, with anatomical reduction and stable internal fixation of fragments as a prerequisite for achieving a good treatment outcome. This retrospective-prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted during the 2014-2020 period and included 24 cases that met the input parameters, using the Letournel and Judet classification,...

Simultaneous metastases of papillary thyroid carcinoma and neuroendocrine tumor of the cecum to cervical lymph nodes: a case report
We present a case of a patient with simultaneous cervical lymph node metastasis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and cecum neuroendocrine tumor (NET). A 45-year-old male patient with the diagnosis of metastatic NET of the cecum underwent fine needle aspiration (FNA) of a positron emission tomography with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG PET) positive nodule in the left thyroid lobe. Due to FNA finding suspect of PTC, the patient underwent total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection. Histopathologic finding revealed PTC of the left thyroid lobe and small solitary lymph node PTC metastasis in the central neck region. Po...

Analysis of diagnostic excisional lymph node biopsy results: 12-year experience of a single center
Acta Clin Croat. 2023 Apr;62(1):58-64. doi: 10.20471/acc.2023.62.01.07.ABSTRACTLymph node biopsy is indicated in patients with suspected malignancy or lymphadenopathy due to unclarified reasons. Lymph node biopsy can be performed as fine needle aspiration biopsy, core biopsy, or excisional lymph node biopsy. In particular, the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma is considered insufficient for oncological treatment unless classified into subgroups. Core biopsy and excisional biopsy can be performed to diagnose lymphoma and classify it into subgroups. Core biopsy may also be limited in some cases for the diagnosis of lymphoma. T...
