Impact of subclinical hypothyroidism on in-hospital outcomes and long-term mortality among acute myocardial infarction patients with diabetic mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: Diabetic AMI patients with SCH had worse in-hospital outcomes and higher 30-day and long-term mortality. Patients with diabetic AMI should pay attention to thyroid function, and SCH is an independent risk factor for short-term and long-term mortality in diabetic AMI patients.PMID:37961871 | DOI:10.1080/00015385.2023.2279421 (Source: Acta Cardiologica)

Review and critical appraisal of the indications for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the ESC guidelines
Acta Cardiol. 2023 Nov 14:1-15. doi: 10.1080/00015385.2023.2279417. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiac MRI has made significant advances in the past decade, becoming an important technique for the evaluation of various cardiac pathologies. The aim of this document is to review the current indications for performing cardiac MRI based on the current ESC guidelines for STEMI, NSTEMI, chronic coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, valvular heart disease, pericardial disease and congenital heart disease. The review discusses the diagnostic and prognostic value of cMR for numerous cardiac d...

Economical aspects of coronary angiography for diagnostic purposes: a Belgian perspective
Acta Cardiol. 2023 Nov 14:1-5. doi: 10.1080/00015385.2023.2281105. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCoronary angiography (CA) is an increasing diagnostic procedure in Belgium. The aim of this analysis was to look at the financial aspects of CA in a large tertiary Belgium hospital to establish if current reimbursement is appropriate. For the analysis of costs we considered the use of the catheterisation laboratory, personnel costs and material costs during multiple weekly periods in the spring of 2023. We calculated that one cathlab needs to perform 8.21 CA's to equal incomes with costs. To allow for a small positive income (2...

Which patients with coronary artery disease should include oral nitrates on their discharge medication list?
CONCLUSION: There was no association between oral nitrates included in the discharge medication list and the development of MACEs among patients with CAD after adjusting for some covariates, such as SYNTAX score. Oral nitrates after discharge for CAD patients combined with hypertension increased the occurrence of MACEs. Oral nitrates after discharge for CAD patients combined with low uric acid levels may increase theoccurrence of MACEs, and close monitoring for any adverse events is recommended.PMID:37961760 | DOI:10.1080/00015385.2023.2271763 (Source: Acta Cardiologica)

Systematic review of leadless pacemaker
Acta Cardiol. 2023 Nov 14:1-11. doi: 10.1080/00015385.2023.2276537. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConventional pacing systems consist of a pacemaker and one or more leads threaded from the device pocket through veins into the heart conducting the pacing therapy to the desired pacing site. Although these devices are effective, approximately one in eight patients treated with these traditional pacing systems experiences a complication attributed to the pacemaker pocket or leads. With the technological advances in electronics, leadless pacemakers that small enough to implant within the heart were introduced. Leadless pacemake...
