Reliability of Uncertainty Tolerance Scales Implemented Among Physicians and Medical Students: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Purpose Uncertainty tolerance (UT) is a construct describing individuals’ perceptions of, and responses to, uncertainty across their cognition, emotion, and behavior. Various UT scales have been designed for physician and medical student populations. However, links between UT and other variables (e.g., training stages) are inconsistent, raising concerns about scale reliability and validity. As reliability is a precondition for validity, a necessary first step in assessing UT scales’ efficacy is evaluating their reliability. Accordingly, the authors conducted a meta-analysis of the reliability of UT scales designed ...

Curricula, Teaching Methods, and Success Metrics of Clinician–Scientist Training Programs: A Scoping Review
Conclusions Although programs are providing clinician–scientists with practical skills training, opportunities exist for curricular and pedagogic optimization that may better support this complex career path. Training programs for clinician–scientists can address contemporary issues of wellness and equity by reconsidering metrics of program success and evolving the core tenets of their education models to include equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and patient-oriented research competencies. Impact of Project ECHO on Patient and Community Health Outcomes: A Scoping Review
Conclusions This review identified emerging evidence of the effectiveness of Project ECHO as a tele-education model that improves patient health outcomes and has the potential to positively impact community health. The small number of included studies suggests that additional evidence of patient- and community-level impact is required to support the continued adoption and implementation of this model. Medical Student Identity Construction Within Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships: An International, Longitudinal Qualitative Study
Conclusions Though continuity is lauded as the cornerstone of LICs, these findings suggest that this is too broad a way of understanding the benefits of LICs. Instead, continuity should be seen as facilitating the development of important relationships within diverse communities of practice, which leads medical students to construct professional identities as responsible, compassionate advocates for underserved populations. This was the case across the institutions, nations, and LIC types in this study. By highlighting the ways in which LICs influence identity, these findings offer important insight relating to the fut...

The Validity of MCAT Scores in Predicting Students’ Performance and Progress in Medical School: Results From a Multisite Study
Conclusions These data demonstrate that MCAT scores add value to the prediction of medical student performance and progress and that applicants from different backgrounds who enter medical school with similar ranges of MCAT scores and UGPAs perform similarly in the curriculum. Exploring Match Space: How Medical School and Specialty Characteristics Affect Residency Match Geography in the United States
Conclusions School characteristics such as region, public/private designation, NIH funding, and percentage of in-state students were associated with residency match geography. Matching into more competitive specialties also showed a marginal increase in match distance. These findings suggest that a student’s choice of specialty and medical school may impact subsequent geographic placement for residency training, which should be considered by students and residency programs alike. Evaluation of the Virtual Interview Format for Resident Recruitment as a Result of COVID-19 Restrictions: Residency Program Directors’ Perspectives
Conclusions Most residency PDs found virtual interviews convenient. However, difficulties in assessing fit virtually, gauging applicants’ interest, and showcasing their respective programs were challenges that may persist should virtual interviews continue post-pandemic. (Source: Academic Medicine)

Association Between Resident Race and Ethnicity and Clinical Performance Assessment Scores in Graduate Medical Education
Conclusions Resident race/ethnicity was associated with assessment scores to the disadvantage of URiM residents. This may reflect bias in faculty assessment, effects of a noninclusive learning environment, or structural inequities in assessment. (Source: Academic Medicine)

Trends in U.S. MD–PhD Program Matriculant Diversity by Sex and Race/Ethnicity
Purpose To examine demographic characteristics of matriculants to U.S. MD–PhD programs by sex and race/ethnicity from academic years (AYs) 2009–2018 and explore the relationships between trends in the percentage of female and underrepresented minority (URM) matriculants to programs with and without Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) funding. Method Linear regression and time trend analysis of the absolute percentage of matriculants into all U.S. MD–PhD programs was performed for self-reported sex and race/ethnicity, using Association of American Medical Colleges data for AYs 2009–2018, including a...

Learning the Language of Medical Device Innovation: A Longitudinal Interdisciplinary Elective for Medical Students
Problem Physicians are playing a growing role as clinician–innovators. Academic physicians are well positioned to contribute to the medical device innovation process, yet few medical school curricula provide students opportunities to learn the conceptual framework for clinical needs finding, needs screening, concept generation and iterative prototyping, and intellectual property management. This framework supports innovation and encourages the development of valuable interdisciplinary communication skills and collaborative learning strategies. Approach Our university offers a novel 3-year-long medical student ...

A Novel Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Training Program for Biomedical Research Trainees
Problem Contemporary science emphasizes efficient translation of scientific discoveries into tangible, innovative products and services to improve human health. Therefore, researchers need skills in innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) to select which problems to address and bring to market the most promising solutions. Training in this skillset is not currently available to most biomedical research trainees. Approach The Entrepreneurship for Biomedicine (E4B) training program was created to develop biomedical researchers’ I&E skills. The program comprises 2 semester-length courses: E4B1 teaches core skills; ...

Intramural Grant Program to Promote Research Activity Among Early-Career Faculty Members
Problem Early grant support for junior faculty members appears to positively influence their career trajectory. The authors sought to determine whether provision of grant support that enables early-career faculty members to conduct clinical, basic science, or educational research improves their academic success and enhances retention. Approach The authors compared career development and retention among 30 Cohn Fellowship recipients and 31 nonrecipients who participated in the same mentoring program. An award of $20,000 to the fellowship recipients ensured protected time for research for 1 year. Academic producti...

Reimagining Faculty Development Deployment: A Multipronged, Pragmatic Approach to Improve Engagement
Problem Faculty at academic health centers have many competing demands on their time, leading to high work stress, burnout, and limited capacity to meaningfully improve their teaching, evaluation, feedback, and other education-related skills. Faculty development provides a useful mechanism to assist faculty in enhancing their knowledge and skills in these areas, but engaging faculty can be a challenge. Approach To promote engagement, the authors developed a multipronged, pragmatic approach to faculty development. They created: (1) brief videos leveraging micro-learning strategies; (2) prepackaged workshops for u...
