Exposure to Stress and Burnout Syndrome in Healthcare Workers, Expert Workers, Professional Associates, and Associates in Social Service Institutions
Conclusion: Overtime is a significant factor associated with workplace burnout. Apart from it, other significant factors associated with workplace burnout were heightened depression, anxiety, and stress levels.PMID:38541225 | PMC:PMC10971948 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60030499 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Tip of the iceberg: unveiling the impact on back disorders from cumulative physical job exposure and evaluating bias from the healthy worker effect using a nationwide longitudinal cohort study
ConclusionOur study clearly demonstrates an 31% increase in the risk of hospital-diagnosed back disorders with just 4 years of PJE over a 10-year period. Further, we find that cross-sectional studies strongly underestimate the risk of back disorders due to the healthy worker effect. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Precarious employment and mental health in the Belgian service voucher system: the role of working conditions and perceived financial strain
ConclusionThese findings are the first based on the Belgian Employment Precariousness Scale (EPRES-BE) and are consistent with earlier-made —but seldom simultaneously tested—assumptions on the mechanisms relating PE to adverse mental health—i.e. involving direct associations and indirect associations via adverse working conditions and material deprivation. Based on the results, we recommend more democratic and higher-quality manag ement practices in the SVS, in addition to higher wages and working time reduction. Exploring the determinants of methane emissions from a worldwide perspective using panel data and machine learning analyses
This article contributes to the scant literature exploring the determinants of methane emissions. A lot is explored considering CO2 emissions, but fewer studies concentrate on the other most long-lived greenhouse gas (GHG), methane which contributes largely to climate change. For the empirical analysis, a large dataset is used considering 192 countries with data ranging from 1960 up to 2022 and considering a wide set of determinants (total central government debt, domestic credit to the private sector, exports of goods and services, GDP per capita, total unemployment, renewable energy consumption, urban population, Gini In...

For first time in a century, India ’s states count politically sensitive caste membership
The more than 1 billion Hindus living in India belong to more than 4000 historical castes, a hereditary identity that shapes social and economic status and mobility. But it has been almost a century since caste membership was counted. India’s federal government, citing logistical and political reasons, has been reluctant to conduct another survey. Now, states are taking things into their own hands. What they are learning could help India better address economic and health inequities and allow social scientists to chart the changes sweeping the country. In October 2023, the northern state of Bihar released findings ...

Monitoring the after-effects of ischemic stroke through EEG microstates
ConclusionTherefore, the classifier EOSVM classification based on features of EEG microstates is helpful to medical practitioners in DoC detection with saved resources that would otherwise be consumed in traditional clinic checks. (Source: PLoS One)

Unlocking local value-added opportunities in the energy transition in former coal regions —the case of Lusatia (Lausitz)
AbstractThe main result of this study is that Lusatia, as an energy transition and structural change region, still has high expansion potential for photovoltaic and wind energy systems. In 2040, electricity production from wind turbines could reach four times the current level. In the case of photovoltaic systems, around seven to eight times the current level is possible. Only in the area of biomass has the expansion potential already been largely exhausted. The building sector can also contribute to achieving climate neutrality. If the renovation rate is significantly increased to 3.3% per year by 2040, the required heati...

Children as next of kin's experiences, practices, and voice in everyday life: a systematic review of studies with Norwegian data (2010-2022)
Conclusions: There is a strong need for more knowledge and competence on the situation and needs of these children when it comes to professionals, parents and the public. Public health initiatives are needed to honour their agency and recognise their contributions in present time to prevent psychosocial problems later in life.PMID:38506846 | DOI:10.1177/14034948241232040 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)

The ethics of firing unvaccinated employees
Some organisations make vaccination a condition of employment. This means prospective employees must demonstrate they have been vaccinated (eg, against measles) to be hired. But it also means organisations must decide whether existing employees should be expected to meet newly introduced vaccination conditions (eg, against COVID-19). Unlike prospective employees who will not be hired if they do not meet vaccination conditions, existing employees who fail to meet new vaccination conditions risk being fired. The latter seems worse than the former. Hence, objections to vaccination mandates commonly centre on the harms that wi...
