A COVID-19 vaccine exemption letter
BY ANISH KOKA I recently saw a young man who came to see me because his place of future employment, a large health system was requiring him to complete the 1º series of his COVID-19 vaccination. He was concerned because he had chest pain after his first mRNA vaccine and was uncomfortable with the risks of a second mRNA dose. He attempted to get a Johnson and Johnson vaccine and was told by pharmacists he was not allowed to mix and match this particular vaccine as he had already received an mRNA dose. With no other option, he came to ask me whether I thought a vaccine exemption was reasonable in his case. He already had...

More Visible Examples of Progress in the Longevity Biotech Industry in 2022
Much of the progress that takes place year after year in any segment of the broader biotech industry is invisible, and the growing portion of that industry focused on aging and longevity is no exception. Biotech is not a high profile industry, particularly because of the heavy dependence on intellectual property and trade secrets as a basis for government-granted monopolies on particular treatments. Details are kept quiet least larger entities in the industry to decide replicate a therapy and call it their own, because the potential rewards are worth the near certainty of a lawsuit. Thus every visible presentation or press...

Wednesday Bible Study: Major continuity error
Chapter 21 is the usual Groundhog Day story about the new king forsaking Yahweh and getting the shit beat out of him for it -- in this case literally. His bowels fall out. But. . . . In the Book of Kings, Elijah dies (actually he ascends into heaven in a chariot of fire) during the reign of Jehoshaphat. Now he ' s writing a letter to Jehoram, after Jehoshaphat ' s death.  Well, okay but for those people who claim the Tanakh has no concept of an afterlife, here you go. It does so, at least in the case of this particular prophet.21 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City...

Sunday Sermonette: Human Life is Sacred
I ' ll just mention that somebody has apparently discovered these Biblical posts and has started emailing me PDFs of scholarly articles about the texts I ' m quoting and the archaeological context of the times. They ' re tracking with me so I don ' t think it ' s just computer generated. If it is, that ' s fairly remarkable. Anyway, to be honest, I haven ' t taken the time to read them so far, because I ' m busy with other things and this is a side project. The historical reality or lack thereof that may be associated with all this isn ' t that important to me. Not to say I won ' t take the time to read at some point, and ...

Exclusive Look at HandX Robotic-Assisted Surgical Device from Human Xtensions
Surgical robotics is dominated by various versions of the da Vinci system from Intuitive Surgical, a competent but expensive tool that’s become a standard in modern advanced hospitals. It took Intuitive about 30 years to achieve this status, but there are systems from J&J, Medtronic, CMR Surgical, and others that are chipping away at the company’s dominance. All of these systems operate under the “master-slave” concept, which involves a surgeon sitting behind a console, away from the patient, who manipulates the mechanical arms of the robot via some kind of joystick-like device. Thanks to ...

Wednesday Bible Study: Follow the rules
Chapter 19 is just a polemic for orthodoxy. Apparently because of his recent alliance with the apostate kingdom of Israel, he has been too tolerant of people who don ' t obey all of Yahweh ' s rules. However, within Judah he does everything else right. He eliminates shrines to other Gods, admonishes the judges that they are representing God, not any secular interest; and most important reaffirms the supremacy of the Levite priesthood, which is the real point of this entire book, and for that matter everything that has come before. Remember, they wrote all this.19 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his p...

Sunday Sermonette: Deja vu
Chapter 18 is also largely copied from the Book of Kings, although the story in Kings has a bit of context this lacks. It is not clear here, but the whole point of this is an elaborate plot by God to kill Ahab because Ahab failed to carry out God ' s orders and kill the captured king Benhadad. Of course, a whole lot of other people get killed in the battle. Why God needed to go through all this shenanigans and get prophets to lie for him in order to set up Ahab I cannot say. God could just have struck him dead or taken some other simpler route. For that matter, he could have killed Benhadad himself if it was so important t...

Wednesday Bible Study: Jumping J!
Jehoshaphat gets a fairly brief mention in Kings, but the Chronicler devotes a few chapters to him, in accordance with his general promotion of the glory of Judah, and disparagement of Israel. It seems he really existed, but as usual the size of his army is absurdly exaggerated. You may have heard " Jumping Jehoshaphat! " as an exclamation of astonishment, kind of like " Sonja Henne ' s tutu! " Apparently it ' s just because it seems like a funny name and it ' s alliterative. It also kind of sounds like Jesus and Joseph and pious people wouldn ' t take the name of the Lord in vain. Otherwise, there doesn ' t seem to be any ...

Sunday Sermonette: More from the Xerox machine
Ch. 16 is pretty much copied from the Book of Kings. It ' s a bit puzzling theologically. It continues the ongoing theme of war between Israel and Judah. Asa deals with an Israeli offensive effectively with diplomacy. He recruits the Syrian king into an alliance and soundly defeats the Baasha the king of Israel. But then a prophet comes along and says he shouldn ' t have done that, instead of recruiting  an ally he should have " relied on the Lord, " then he could have conquered Syria as well. Asa doesn ' t like this and throws the guy in jail. Then Asa gets an unspecified foot disease, and he relies on physicia...

With access to my records, I took my business elsewhere
By EPATIENT DAVE DEBRONKART Not our usual headshot but it is Dave! I had a skin cancer diagnosed in November. It’s my third, and I researched the last one heavily, so I knew what I wanted (Mohs on the nose). But the hospital that did the diagnosis insisted I wait and have a consult visit in January, and *then* they’d let me schedule the procedure, probably in March. I said I know what treatment I want – can’t I schedule the surgery now? They said, “That’s not how we do it.” So I went home and called around. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said if I could get th...

Muslim Anger at Sweden over Qur ’an Burning Is Misplaced
Mustafa Akyol andJohan NorbergThese days, there isanger across the Muslim world against Sweden. Large protests against the small Scandinavian nation have taken place in Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. In some places Swedish flags were burnt, and some even chanted, “Death to the Swedish government.”All this is a reaction against an act of one man: far ‐right Danish politician Rasmus Paludan, who also happens to be a Swedish citizen. On Jan 21,he publicly burnt a copy of the Qur ’an in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. Turkish authorities responded with st...

Immigrants Use Less Welfare Than Native ‐Born Americans
ConclusionThe average immigrant consumed 27.3 percent less welfare than native-born Americans in 2020. Further reform should reduce that substantially by building a higher wall around the welfare state instead of around the country. Still better would be reducing or eliminating the welfare state for all but reducing or eliminating non-citizen access is a politically feasible first step. In the long-run, there are good reasons to think that immigrants won ’t increase the size of the welfare state and compelling evidence that they would reduce support for it. Still, the net-fiscal effects are most important – watch this ...

Wednesday Bible Study: Judean Taliban
In Chapter 15, King Asa decides to please God by decreeing that everybody who doesn ' t worship the right God, in the right way, will be killed. This is indeed very pleasing to God. ' Nuff said.15 The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded.2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. TheLord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law.4 But in their distress they turned to theLord, t...
