Major depressive disorder and irritable bowel syndrome risk: A Mendelian randomization study
by Guowei Sun, Yueyi Jiang BackgroundPrevious studies have revealed a connection between major depressive disorder (MDD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but it remains obscure if the two diseases are related causally. Mendelian randomization was utilized in this investigation to ascertain whether MDD contributed to the emergence of IBS. MethodsTo examine possible connections between MDD and IBS, we used two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) utilizing summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) provided information on genetic associations with MDD (cases: 135,458...

Role of the GLP2-Wnt1 axis in silicon-rich alkaline mineral water maintaining intestinal epithelium regeneration in piglets under early-life stress
Cell Mol Life Sci. 2024 Mar 12;81(1):126. doi: 10.1007/s00018-024-05162-x.ABSTRACTStress-induced intestinal epithelial injury (IEI) and a delay in repair in infancy are predisposing factors for refractory gut diseases in adulthood, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Hence, it is necessary to develop appropriate mitigation methods for mammals when experiencing early-life stress (ELS). Weaning, as we all know, is a vital procedure that all mammalian newborns, including humans, must go through. Maternal separation (MS) stress in infancy (regarded as weaning stress in animal science) is a commonly used ELS paradigm. Drink...

Prevalence of fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome and its association with studying medicine, a cross ‐sectional study in Al‐Baath University, Syria
ConclusionWe found an increased prevalence of IBS among medical students. The prevalence of FM did not show any relation to studying medicine. We recommend additional prospective studies to assess whether studying medicine could be a risk factor for these disorders or not. (Source: Brain and Behavior)

Integrative Approaches to Managing Gut Health
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo summarize key integrative approaches to managing common gastrointestinal conditions.Recent FindingsLifestyle interventions like diet, exercise, and stress reduction impact the gut microbiome and gastrointestinal symptoms. Evidence supports mind-body therapies, herbs, certain supplements, and other modalities as complimentary approaches, when appropriate, for common conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or gastroesophageal reflux disease.SummaryAn integrative approach optimizes both conventional treatments and incorporates lifestyle modifications, complimentary modalities, and the doctor-patie...

The prevalence of fibromyalgia in adults at Al-Karak Jordan: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: This study sheds light on fibromyalgia's prevalence and associated factors in the Al-Karak population. The identified predictors highlight the necessity for comprehensive healthcare strategies and interventions to mitigate the disease burden. These findings aid policymakers and healthcare professionals in planning and implementing effective measures for fibromyalgia management and prevention. Further research is warranted to deepen our understanding of fibromyalgia's complexity and its implications in this region.PMID:38463111 | PMC:PMC10923264 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001722 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Gender-specific insights into the irritable bowel syndrome pathophysiology. Focus on gut dysbiosis and permeability
Eur J Intern Med. 2024 Mar 10:S0953-6205(24)00105-5. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder involving the brain-gut interaction. IBS is characterized by persistent abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. IBS exerts significant impacts on quality of life and imposes huge economic costs. Global epidemiological data reveal variations in IBS prevalence, both globally and between genders, necessitating comprehensive studies to uncover potential societal and cultural influences. While the exact pathophysiology of IB...

Cumulative Anticholinergic Burden and its Predictors among Older Adults with Alzheimer ’s Disease Initiating Cholinesterase Inhibitors
ConclusionFour out of five older adults with AD had some level of anticholinergic burden, with over 60% having moderate –high anticholinergic burden. Several predisposing, enabling, and need factors were associated with the cumulative anticholinergic burden. The study findings suggest a critical need to minimize the cumulative anticholinergic burden to improve AD care. (Source: Drugs and Aging)

The critical role of muscularis macrophages in modulating the enteric nervous system function and gastrointestinal motility
J Smooth Muscle Res. 2024;60:1-9. doi: 10.1540/jsmr.60.1.ABSTRACTMacrophages are the originators of inflammatory compounds, phagocytic purifiers in their local environment, and wound healing protectors in oxidative environments. They are molded by the tissue milieu they inhabit, with gastrointestinal (GI) muscularis macrophages (MMs) being a prime example. MMs are located in the muscular layer of the GI tract and contribute to muscle repair and maintenance of GI motility. MMs are often in close proximity to the enteric nervous system, specifically near the enteric neurons and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs). Consequentl...
