Connected Medical Devices —the Next Target for Ransomware Attacks
The following is a guest article by Ryan Witt, Healthcare Cybersecurity Leader at Proofpoint The Internet of Medical Things, or IoMT, is a deep web of interconnected devices that increasingly plays a vital role in care delivery. Unfortunately, these devices have also significantly enhanced healthcare’s cyber risk, and security researchers have raised alarms about the vulnerabilities of these devices for more than a decade. While we haven’t seen threat actors widely exploiting the vulnerabilities in the wild, it is only a matter of time—and the results of an event like an IoMT ransomware attack will be devastating to ...

Is it really depressing? Really living with chronic pain
Someone responded to my post Unpalatable truths about pain saying it was depressing. For a moment I thought – yeah, it is really. And then I reflected on my life living with, and working with people dealing daily with chronic, ongoing, persistent pain. It’s not inevitably miserable. Is there something wrong with me? This, of course, set me to thinking maybe my pain isn’t as intense as others. Well – how would I know? I can’t give my pain a number out of 10. It’s just there and I can’t remember a time without any pain, so I can’t compare a 0 = no pain at all with anything ...

The Tension in TEFCA
The following is a guest article by Don Rucker, MD, Chief Strategy Officer at 1upHealth Patients want the same modern computing experience in healthcare that they enjoy the rest of their lives to extend to our health and medical care. They want a modern consumer experience with ease of access, speed, availability, accuracy, and affordability. US healthcare is notorious for whiffing on the consumer experience, and it looks like we are about to miss another big opportunity to get things right if the current TEFCA plans stay mired in 90s tech. The public comment period for the current TEFCA proposal closes on June 20th, and I...

ChatGPT Alternatives For Healthcare And Research
ChatGPT has made a name for itself in the world of AI, along with Bard and MedPaLM. Following the success of these first-generation language models, a host of alternatives, including the open-source project Spark NLP for Healthcare, have emerged. Our exploration today focuses on alternative solutions that, while underpinned by the principles of ChatGPT, have potential utility in the healthcare and research sectors. ChatGPT is remarkable, but it does have its drawbacks: a knowledge cut-off in November 2021, unilateral control and updates by OpenAI, an iOS-exclusive mobile app, and API-only integration, which can be quite...

Taking part in a study
I have tried over recent years to become a more regular blood donor.  So, I signed up for a study of the experience.   Would naming it here cause any sort of bias?   Don ' t know, but in case, I won ' t name it.  It does have a record in ISRCTN, which you can look for.  One of the investigators was the lead in another study, which I also won ' t name, but I was invited to join it.  It has a record in ISRCTN, which you can look for, and in which I can see that I am in Phase 3.  Phase 2 was to test the feasibility of the study design.  This second stu...

HealthWorks for Northern Virginia Gained More Control After Moving to eClinicalWorks Cloud EHR
Troubleshooting EHR and system issues at HealthWorks of Northern Virginia used to involve up to five different vendors. It was a nightmare. By moving to eClinlcalWorks’ cloud-EHR, they eliminated many of their system issues and now only have one vendor to deal with. Contrary to the prevailing belief, HealthWorks’ gained MORE control of their environment by moving to the cloud. Healthcare IT Today had the chance to sit down with Jesse Burke, Director of IT at HealthWorks for Northern Virginia to have a conversation about their migration to the cloud. During our conversation we busted a few myths about moving to the clou...

Surprisingly, the World Is Becoming More Equal
Chelsea FollettReading the news or listening to politicians and pundits speak, one could easily get the impression that global inequality is getting worse. But is the widely held belief that the world is becoming less equal true, or is it mistaken? The overwhelming majority of long ‐term trends regarding living standards—ranging from rising life expectancy to declining rates of poverty and hunger—show considerable improvement, even accounting for recent pandemic‐related setbacks. You can explore the evidence for yourself on websites such asHuman Progress.org. Have those improvements been widely shared, ...

Study: Self-guided internet-delivered treatment can significantly reduce ADHD symptoms among adults
Although ADHD was originally considered to be a disorder of childhood, it has been clear for years that it also impacts adults. At least 60% of children diagnosed with ADHD struggle with symptoms into adulthood and the estimated prevalence of ADHD in adults is between 4 and 5%. As with children and teens, medication treatment is extensively used to treat ADHD in adults. Although medication is a core treatment for adult ADHD, and helps many individuals, many continue to experience impairment and some experience adverse effects that preclude ongoing medication treatment. Although psychological treatments for adult ADHD — e...

Technical Difficulties
My old ' puter was pretty much shitting the bed so I had to replace it. This required transferring its contents to the new machine, which ended up taking pretty much all day -- well, 3 1/2 hours plus commuting time with a tech support guy --  and then the rest of the afternoon restoring my logins, downloading cloud applications, and figuring out the new OS and whatnot. That got me thinking about the hassles connected with all the technology that ' s supposed to save us time and effort and amplify our powers. Somebody -- one of those radical environmentalist types like Murray Bookchin or E.F. Schumacher -- oh wait...

Healthcare Cybersecurity Is Difficult to Maintain, How a Security Operations Center Can Help
Conclusion Healthcare has topped the list of most breached industries for the past 12 years — a dubious distinction. While hospitals and health systems are taking cybersecurity more seriously, the type of breaches and their severity continue to increase, as evidenced by the large rise in hacking incidents. An in-house or outsourced security operations center can help level the playing field for hospitals through a total environment approach designed to detect and remediate threats before they cause hospital systems to crash and patient care to be impacted. ChatGPT Misses the Mark in Healthcare – What It Needs to Succeed
The following is a guest article by Michael Blum, MD, Cardiologist, Co-founder and CEO at BeeKeeperAI and Former Chief Medical Information Officer at UCSF Medical Center The advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT3 (GPT3) Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot sparked an unprecedented societal appreciation for the power of AI. While AI has been broadly deployed across industries for a decade, it remained mostly hidden from the typical user. The release of GPT3 in late 2022 changed all of that.  Suddenly, a user with minimal computer literacy and no programming or data science training whatsoever could ask an AI-based applicati...
