In fact, early in January,38 different organizations joined hands to call on Congress to defend privacy. The open letter was organized byFight for the Future and featured co ‐signers from the Blockchain Association, Crypto Freedom Lab, DeFi Education Fund, Electric Coin Company, Filecoin Foundation, and many others. Muslim Anger at Sweden over Qur ’an Burning Is Misplaced
Mustafa Akyol andJohan NorbergThese days, there isanger across the Muslim world against Sweden. Large protests against the small Scandinavian nation have taken place in Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. In some places Swedish flags were burnt, and some even chanted, “Death to the Swedish government.”All this is a reaction against an act of one man: far ‐right Danish politician Rasmus Paludan, who also happens to be a Swedish citizen. On Jan 21,he publicly burnt a copy of the Qur ’an in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. Turkish authorities responded with st...

Practicing Medicine without a License: When Patients and Politicians Play Doctor
BY MICHAEL KIRSCH We’ve all heard the adage, leave it to the professionals.  It’s typically used when an individual has wandered out of his lane.  How many folks go beyond their knowledge and skills with home projects, for example, who must then hire a real professional to mop up the mistakes?  Luckily for me, the only tools that I – a gastroenterologist – know how to use are a colonoscope and an endoscope, so there’s no chance that I will be tempted to perform any plumbing or electrical tasks at home.   Although patients are not medical professionals, they routinely bring me results...

Dramatically Improving Population Health Through Remote Patient Monitoring Data
The following is a guest article by Anish Sebastian, CEO and Co-Founder of Babyscripts. As winter storms sweep the country and complicate transportation, healthcare access becomes a front-and-center issue. Rural hospitals across the U.S. are shuttering their labor, delivery, and maternity wards, in many cases closing altogether. Pregnant women in remote rural areas are even more at risk this winter than previous years. Thirty-six percent of U.S. counties now fit the designation of “maternity care desert,” meaning they have no obstetric hospitals or birth centers and no obstetric providers. For hospitals that have manag...

We hope this gives you a chance to catch up on anything you may have missed during the week. Lessons Learned From a Health System’s Internal Data Breach. An Alabama health system recently fired an employee who accessed 2,500 patient records without authorization. Mike Semel said this is a telltale example of why health systems need to enforce HIPAA’s minimum necessary access rule, along with logging access and updating incident respo...

Friday Feature: School Choice Milestones
Colleen HroncichAs we wrap up our National School Choice Week look at the history of school choice, I ’m going to explore some notable milestones in the U.S. over the years. For more in‐depth coverage, be sure to check out our newSchool Choice Timeline. When we talk about school choice, we generally mean a program where public funding follows students to nonpublic schools. This becomes particularly important after the mid ‐1800s, when state governments began to mandate taxpayers fund and children attend specific schools established and run by local government entities. Prior to that, education was typically...

Saving us from artificial intelligence
If you’ve been following developments in technology over the last few months, you can’t fail to have noticed the advent of artificial intelligence. There are AI tools that can take a text prompt and respond with a realistic face, a painting in the style of a well-known artist, or a Shakespearean poem. Some of these tools, such as ChatGPT, which I have mentioned several times before in recent weeks, can translate and edit your text, convert computer code in one language into another, they can even generate working computer code given an appropriate prompt. They can write news articles, essays, even research pape...

The Supreme Court Should Reject an Attempt to Undermine Section 230
Thomas A. Berry and David Meyer-LindenbergNot everyone may know about Section 230, but it plays a huge role in shaping the online world. It ’s a short law; the most important part is just twenty ‐six words long. And it was enacted in 1996 because Congress was worried that the internet would become a cesspool of harmful content if internet companies could be sued for anything their users posted. In 1995, a New York state court had held that Prodigy, an early internet company, could be sued for defamation for something that one of Prodigy ’s users had posted. Because Prodigy moderated its users’...

Costco Wholesale: What Is Its Pharmacy Strategy? It's Complicated.
Conclusion: Costco Pharmacy Manages Hybrid Cash/Insurance Payments for Rx Drugs Better Than Most Other Big Pharmacy Chains. Still, Costco Won ' tALWAYS Be the Low-Price Leader Because of How the U.S. Prescription Drug Market Functions.Costco Pharmacy ' s cash prices for many prescriptions may be low enough for people to simply bypass their insurance and pay out-of-pocket, which Costco welcomes, similar to how Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co. or a number of other rapidly-growing, cash-only pharmacies which are popping up nationwide operate because their cash prices may be potentially even cheaper than by using insurance. Howev...

What is trypophobia? #TriggerWarning
Trypophobia is the name for the phobia (intense and apparently irrational fear) of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. The term was coined by a web user back in 2005 on an internet forum. I always assumed its etymology lies in the word tripe and the Greek work for fear, maybe that is what she was thinking of. I find tripe repellant to look at (and eat, come to that). It’s a weird one though isn’t it…why should anyone be scared of holes or bumps? Well, food full of holes might be rotten, whereas bumps might be present on food or skin because of disease. So, it could be that is the expl...

Chicken with Dried Mushrooms & Tomatoes
When it comes time to figure out what to make for dinner, I love the internet as much as anyone. I usually head straight to the NY Times Cooking section, or to Epicurious, Saveur or Food 52 for ideas and inspiration. But one weekend this past year, with our Philly travel plans cancelled by an upcoming storm (there is nothing worse than the Jersey turnpike in a thunderstorm with tornado and flood warnings), I had the unexpected luxury of free time on a Saturday morning. Sitting with a cup of coffee, I opened Biba’s Taste of Italy, a cookbook whose spine I had yet to crack in the year since it had been gifted to me by ...

Take a break from cardiology : How to debate a complex topic in a forum ?
Pardon ,this video is nothing to do with cardiology. It is from the archives of the United nations library .This can teach some important lessons in art of communication , sharing to all folks, especially medical students. It was recorded in 1959 in Newyork, UN head quarters.Four 17 year old school girls & boys were invited for a debate on a complex topic. Does God exist ? How do you pray ? and what is the purpose of different religions ? I keep wondering , how these youngsters accumulated so much wisdom and express it in such a polite manner too. Mind you, this was recorded , when learning happened with ...

Security Sunday: Ten tips for protecting yourself online
Here are ten great tips to protect yourself online. Use strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts. Avoid using easily guessable information, such as your name or birthdate, in your passwords. Enable two-factor (or multi-factor)authentication on any accounts that support it. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code sent to your phone or email in addition to your password. Opt for an authenticator app if possible rather than relying on SMS. Keep your operating system and all software up to date. Software updates often include security patches that fix known vulnerabilities. Be cautious when clicking...

Productivity Starts With Courage
I recently starting developing a new deep dive course, which I expect to launch later this calendar quarter. It’s called Engage, and my intentions for it are ambitious. Engage is about optimizing personal productivity and creating a powerfully engaged life. It’s going to be unlike any productivity course or book you’ve ever seen before. This will be our 6th course, and I want it to be our very best one – helping a wide range of people experience major productivity breakthroughs. I’m framing this as our one course to rule them all. I want this to be our #1 flagship course. These are the big r...
