Gra-CRC-miRTar: The pre-trained nucleotide-to-graph neural networks to identify potential miRNA targets in colorectal cancer
bioRxiv [Preprint]. 2024 Apr 20:2024.04.15.589599. doi: 10.1101/2024.04.15.589599.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most diagnosed cancer and the second deadliest cancer worldwide representing a major public health problem. In recent years, increasing evidence has shown that microRNA (miRNA) can control the expression of targeted human messenger RNA (mRNA) by reducing their abundance or translation, acting as oncogenes or tumor suppressors in various cancers, including CRC. Due to the significant up-regulation of oncogenic miRNAs in CRC, elucidating the underlying mechanism and identifying dysregulated miRNA tar...

Overview of the Epidemiology and Clinical Care Considerations for Adolescents and Young Adults Living with or at Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus
This article provides an updated examination of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemiologic trends among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in the United States, highlighting the significant public health challenge posed by HIV within this demographic. Despite a notable decline in HIV diagnoses among AYAs, challenges remain, particularly due to 50% of AYAs living with HIV being unaware of their status. The article aims to evaluate current clinical recommendations, identify deficiencies, and propose evidence-based improvements for HIV prevention, diagnosis, and care, with the goal of enhancing health outcomes and redu...

Cascade testing for hereditary cancer in Singapore: how  population genomics help guide clinical policy
AbstractHereditary Cancer makes up around 5 –10% of all cancers. It is important to diagnose hereditary cancer in a timely fashion, as not only do patients require long-term care from a young age, but their relatives also require management. The main approach to capture at-risk relatives is cascade testing. It involves genetic testing of re latives of the first detected carrier of a pathogenic variant in a family i.e. the proband. The current standard of care for cascade testing is a patient-mediated approach. Probands are then advised to inform and encourage family members to undergo genetic testing. In Singapore, casca...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 667: Unveiling the Role of Human Papillomavirus in Urogenital Carcinogenesis a Comprehensive Review
n Human papillomavirus (HPV), an oncogenic DNA virus, is the most common sexually transmitted virus and significant public health concern globally. Despite the substantial prevalence of HPV infection among men, routine testing remains elusive due to the lack of approved HPV tests and the complexity of detection methods. Various studies have explored the link between HPV and genitourinary cancers, revealing different associations influenced by geographic variation, histological subtype and methodological differences. These findings underscore the importance of further research to elucidate the role of HPV in male urogen...

World War I and the Thomas Splint: A Historical Review
Mil Med. 2024 Apr 24:usae108. doi: 10.1093/milmed/usae108. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Thomas splint, the first practical traction splint for femoral fractures, revolutionized the capabilities of military medicine. Its usage in WWI lowered the mortality rate from 80% to nearly 15%. Its development not only shaped modern orthopedics but also established the splint as standard equipment in hospitals worldwide.PMID:38656831 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae108 (Source: Military Medicine)

Menthol and filter ventilation in cigarettes: prevalence estimates and relationships with harm perception and smoking exposure
CONCLUSION: The well-documented harm misperception linked to higher FV is more apparent in those using non-menthol than menthol cigarettes. Increased exposures were observed among some non-menthol cigarette users compared with some menthol cigarette users. These results should by no means delay a menthol ban but rather motivate concerted public health efforts to accompany the menthol ban to maximise smoking cessation.PMID:38658056 | DOI:10.1136/tc-2023-058495 (Source: Cancer Control)

Pursuance of a Yoruba name for cervical cancer in Southwest Nigeria: a case study
CONCLUSIONS: There was no consensus Yoruba name for cervical cancer among the study participants. Efforts to educate the Yoruba speaking populace about cervical cancer, its prevention, management and participation in its research can be frustrated if a generally accepted Yoruba name is not provided for this cancer. Stakeholders' collaboration is required to get an appropriate Yoruba name for cervical cancer.PMID:38658005 | DOI:10.1136/bmjopen-2023-074020 (Source: Cancer Control)
