The influence of sepsis on erythrocytes morphology: case report and literature review
Rom J Morphol Embryol. 2024 Jan-Mar;65(1):119-123. doi: 10.47162/RJME.65.1.15.ABSTRACTThis paper highlights a clinical case of sepsis caused by soft tissue infection. Peripheral blood smear, plasma value of inflammatory biomarkers and the white blood cells count were performed. Significant morphological changes were revealed through peripheral blood smear test two days after patient admission. Patient developed septic shock after the third day in intensive care unit (ICU). Laboratory results showed major morphological changes (erythrocytes deformity, abnormal neutrophils); these were correlated with elevated plasma value o...

Irreversible Transmural Intestinal Necrosis in Acute Mesenteric Ischemia: Retrospective Cohort Study from a High-Volume Hospital
Conclusions: The presence of ascites, peritonitis, intestinal diameter >2.35 cm, and serum CREA >95 μmol/L were independently correlated with ITIN for AMI cases, while serum CRP >15 mg/L and CREA >100 μmol/L independently increased the risk of EBR.PMID:38531051 | DOI:10.1089/lap.2024.0016 (Source: Adv Data)

Acute kidney injury in children with lymphoma
CONCLUSION: TLS, lung infection, and lymphoma clinical stage were identified as independent risk factors for AKI in children with lymphoma during the first 30 days of hospitalization. Clinicians should increase their awareness of AKI in hospitalized patients with lymphoma.PMID:38529931 | DOI:10.5414/CN111157 (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

Risk factors and mortality outcomes of COVID-19 in people living with HIV: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study was performed to reveal the risk factors associated with mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV) who were diagnosed with COVID-19. Studies reporting deaths among PLHIV and infected with SARS-CoV-2 were investigated. After protocol setup and registration, the extracted sources were categorized and assessed for quality. This study examined ten articles with a total of 46,136 patients. Patients aged ≥ 60 years (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.617, 3.050; p < 0.001), male (HR = 1.668; 95% CI: 1.179, 2.361; p = 0.004), and people with diabetes (risk ratio [RR] = 3.34; 95% CI: 1.45, 7.68; p = 0.005) were ...

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Oncological Surgeries: CORONAL Study
CONCLUSIONS: Surgical oncology patients who underwent postoperative care in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic had higher hazard of 28-day mortality. Furthermore, these patients had higher odds of respiratory complications and pulmonary infections. Trials registration The study is registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials under the code RBR-8ygjpqm, UTN code U1111-1293-5414.PMID:38530529 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15152-9 (Source: Ann Oncol)
