UC lands largest grant ever for emergency medicine
The University of Cincinnati has been awarded a $29 million grant to study a clot-busting drug used to treat acute ischemic stroke, the largest amount ever awarded to the College of Medicine ’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
The grant by the National Institutes of Health will fund research on the effectiveness of combining a drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, with the blood thinners argatroban or eptifibatide.

The combination of the clot-busting drug tPA with an infusion of the antiplatelet drug eptifibatide dissolves blood clots safely and more quickly than tPA alone, a study led by University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers has found. Results from the study, known as the CLEAR-ER Stroke Trial, are published online in the journal Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
