Managed competition in the United States: How well is it promoting equity and efficiency?
Health Econ Policy Law. 2024 Jan 8:1-15. doi: 10.1017/S174413312300035X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTManaged competition frameworks aim to control healthcare costs and promote access to high-quality health insurance and services through a combination of public policies and market forces. In the United States, managed competition delivery systems are varied and diffused across a patchwork of divided markets and populations. This, coupled with extremely high national health spending per capita, makes a more unified managed competition strategy an appealing alternative to a currently struggling healthcare system. We examine...

Population-based incidence of psoriasis vulgaris in Germany: analysis of national statutory insurance data from 65 million population
This study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of the age-specific and sex-specific incidence of psoriasis vulgaris in Germany. The data were obtained in the context of a morbidity-based risk adjustment by statutory health insurance companies in Germany, comprising information regarding 65 million population. Psoriasis vulgaris diagnoses were made and coded according to the 10th edition of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Age-specific and sex-specific incidences were calculated using data from 2009 to 2011. There was a rise in the age- and sex-specific incidence...

Valuing innovative endoscopic techniques: Hemostatic powder for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumor bleeding
Access to new endoscopic treatment modalities often depends on price. To resolve this gap and therefore help to ensure that care delivery can occur on a clinical basis, we aimed to establish the value to insurers of novel hemostatic powder to treat gastrointestinal tumor bleeding. Treatment Referrals Post-prohibition of Alcohol Exclusion Laws: Evidence from Colorado and Illinois
ConclusionsOur study reveals a potential positive association between the repeal and prohibition of AELs and increased alcohol-related treatment admissions. These findings suggest that states could enhance treatment opportunities for alcohol-related disorders by reconsidering their stance on AELs. While our study highlights the possible public health benefits of repealing AELs, it also paves the way for additional studies in this domain. (Source: Journal of General Internal Medicine)

Long-term risk of adnexal operation after vaginal hysterectomy for pelvic organs prolapse repair
CONCLUSION: In women undergoing vaginal hysterectomy for pelvic organ prolapse without opportunistic adnexectomy, preservation of the adnexa poses only a very low risk for adnexal pathology or need for reoperation later in life.PMID:38163397 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.12.026 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Burden with No Benefit: Prior Authorization in Congenital Cardiology
AbstractPrior authorization is a process that health insurance companies use to determine if a patient ’s health insurance will cover certain medical treatments, procedures, or medications. Prior authorization requests are common in adult congenital and pediatric cardiology (ACPC) due to need for advanced diagnostics, complex procedures, disease-specific medications, and the heterogeneity of the AC PC population. Prior authorizations in ACPC are rarely denied, but nonetheless, they are often accompanied by significant administrative burden on clinical care teams and delays in patient care. Prior authorizations have been ...

Impact of Receiving Genetic Diagnoses on Parents' Perceptions of Their Children with Autism and Intellectual Disability
J Autism Dev Disord. 2023 Dec 29. doi: 10.1007/s10803-023-06195-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo assess whether genetic test results identifying the cause of a child's autism, when accompanied by other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), including intellectual disability, alter how parents perceive and treat their child. 28 parents of 22 individuals with autism (mean age: 15 years), usually with other NDDs, were interviewed after receiving genetic diagnoses indicating a de novo mutation through the Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research for Knowledge study. Diagnosis of a de novo genetic variant can alter parental p...

Knowledge and attitudes towards sharing of health data: Results of a population survey
CONCLUSION: In Germany, as in other European countries, we observe a great willingness of people to release health data for research purposes. However, the propensity to use the electronic health file is comparatively low, as is the acceptance of an opt-out procedure, which in the literature is considered a prerequisite for the successful implementation of electronic health records in other countries. Unsurprisingly, a general trust in research and government agencies that process health data is a key factor.PMID:38142202 | DOI:10.1016/j.zefq.2023.11.001 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Evidenz, Fortbildung und Qualitat im Gesundheitswesen)

By implementing telematics technology, insurers may tailor insurance premiums to individual drivers, taking into account their real driving habits and performance, ultimately leading to improved road safety, cost savings, and an empowered driving community. The current study, through bibliometric analysis, carefully identifies and evaluate...
