Security as the Standard: Utilizing the Cloud for Private Healthcare Data
The following is a guest article by Jim Cropper, Director of Sales at Brother International Healthcare technology development and modern security needs are continually evolving, calling for a shift toward digitization and interoperability to facilitate easier access to information, and more efficient and effective healthcare delivery. The proof of this is in the 78% of office-based physicians and 96% of non-federal acute care hospitals in the U.S. that are in the process of adopting or have implemented electronic health record (EHR) systems. This means that paper documents and manila folders are no longer sufficient to m...

How Policy Changes Can Fix Market Distortions in Healthcare and Improve the Country ’s Debt
The following is a guest article by Zach Markin, Co-Founder and CEO at HTD Health American healthcare is the most dysfunctional industry in our country. Historically, it is the most prolific driver of family bankruptcy, and now it is on its way to bankrupting our country collectively. A major justification for President Biden’s tax hike proposal is to shore up the tenuous finances of Medicare whose trust fund is forecasted to be depleted by 2028. While this is important, such efforts address the symptoms of a dysfunctional industry rather than the root causes. While the near-term liquidity and long-term financial health ...

Emerging Technologies in Healthcare IT and Their Regulatory Considerations
Everybody loves to get and play with new toys. When we were children the toys were things like Barbies or Play-Doh. Now the toys we’re excited to get and play with are the emerging technologies in healthcare like AI or IoT devices. The big difference though is we can’t take these toys out and play with them with abandon like we did with the Play-Doh. While new and exciting, there are serious consequences to think about and regulations that need to be put in place and that will be put in place. To talk more about the regulatory considerations for implementing these emerging technologies, we reached out to our in...

Has Sensemaking Collapsed When It Comes To U.S. Healthcare?
By MIKE MAGEE This past week my wife and I were at a family event to celebrate my brother-in-law’s 70th birthday. Our extended family has more than a few doctors. A physician nephew who had read CODE BLUE and had a strong interest in health policy asked if I felt I (and others) were too hard on doctors. My response was yes, but that it was intentional and came with the territory. Combining scientific, sometimes life and death expertise, with high-touch compassion, understanding and partnership has always been a “big ask” but that was what we and others had signed up for as “health professionals.” But can a ...

Why It Is Important To Understand Multimodal Large Language Models In Healthcare
The future of medicine is undoubtedly inextricably linked to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Although this revolution has been brewing for years, the past few months marked a major change, as algorithms finally moved out of the specialized labs and into our daily lives.  The public debut of Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT which became the fastest-growing consumer application of all time, has been a roaring success. LLMs are machine learning models trained on a vast amount of text data which enables them to understand and generate human-like text based on the patterns and structures they̵...

THCB 20th Birthday Classic: Value-based care – no progress since 1997?
As the 20th Birthday rolls on I thought I’d bring out a more recent piece first published in October 2020, albeit one that relies heavily on 25 year old data to make a point. This is some evidence to back up Jeff Goldsmith’s comment on the original that for all the talk “ ‘Value based” payment is a religious movement, not a business trend’ ” By the way, Humana updated these numbers last year and there’s been basically no change — Matthew Holt By MATTHEW HOLT Humana is out with a report saying that its Medicare Advantage members who are covered by value-based care (VBC) ar...

The Importance of Patient Portal Usability
The following is a guest article by Dr. Bruce Bassi, Advisory Board Member at CharmHealth Most patients have almost certainly received an invitation to join their electronic medical record communication system, or portal for their particular doctor’s office. Clinicians have their own opinions about medical record systems, but what about patients? Typically, users log into their portal with one specific purpose, then log off, and do not wish to spend too much time engaging in a health portal system. If the system is too cumbersome or difficult to use, it would reduce engagement and not achieve its intended purpose. The pr...
