Chemsex and risk of sexually transmitted infections: a perspective from India
Introduction Chemsex, also called as party and play or intensive sex partying, is the intentional use of psychoactive drugs before or during sex, mostly by gay and bisexual men having sex with men (GBMSM) to enable, enhance and prolong sexual interaction.1 The practice is now becoming increasingly common among heterosexual individuals too.1 Various chemsex drugs have been described (table 1), the principal three that are commonly used include mephedrone, gamma-hydroxybutyrate/gamma-butyrolactone (GHB/GBL) and crystallised methamphetamine.1 The injectable use of these substances for similar purpose is called as slamming or ...

The Promise of a Longer Lifetime
Modern hygiene has been described as the reaction against the old fatalistic creed that deaths inevitably occur at a constant rate. The study of vital statistics shows that there is no “iron law of mortality.” According to a report prepared for the National Conservation Commission fifteen years ago, statistics for India showed that the average duration of life there was less than twenty-five years. In Sweden it was over fifty years; in Massachusetts, forty-five years. The leng th of life is increasing wherever sanitary science and preventive medicine are applied. In India it is stationary. In Europe it doubled in three...

Role of Imaging in Predicting the Deep Surgical Margin in Gingivobuccal Complex Cancers: A Pilot Study
AbstractCancers arising from the gingivobuccal complex are one of the most common types of cancer in the oral cavity and are associated with poor prognosis. Among the various prognostic factors, positive surgical margin is the most important one that can be controlled by the operating surgeon. The deep surgical margins for buccal mucosa cancers is normally assessed by palpating the skin for induration and skin pinchability. The present study evaluates the role of imaging in assessing the deep surgical margin and its efficacy for skin preservation in buccal mucosa/ gingivobuccal carcinomas. The patients of gingivobuccal com...

To Study the Pre Operative Indicators of Incudal Necrosis in Tubo-Tympanic Chronic Otitis Media
In this study, it was observed that the presence of granulations over the perforation margins, disease persisting for more than 10 years, moderate to moderately severe hearing loss appear to be significant reliable indicators of incudal necrosis in tubo-tympanic type of CSOM. All patients of tubo-tympanic type of CSOM should be assessed in detail so as to reach early diagnosis of ossicular erosion that helps in surgical decision making and preparedness regarding ossiculoplasty and patient consent. Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1846: Sandalwood Oils of Different Origins Are Active In Vitro against Madurella mycetomatis, the Major Fungal Pathogen Responsible for Eumycetoma
i A. Khalid In the search for new bioactive agents against the infectious pathogen responsible for the neglected tropical disease (NTD) mycetoma, we tested a collection of 27 essential oils (EOs) in vitro against Madurella mycetomatis, the primary pathogen responsible for the fungal form of mycetoma, termed eumycetoma. Among this series, the EO of Santalum album (Santalaceae), i.e., East Indian sandalwood oil, stood out prominently with the most potent inhibition in vitro. We, therefore, directed our research toward 15 EOs of Santalum species of different geographical origins, along with two samples of EOs from other p...

Drug Repositioning: A Monetary Stratagem to Discover a New Application of Drugs
Curr Drug Discov Technol. 2024;21(1):e101023222023. doi: 10.2174/0115701638253929230922115127.ABSTRACTDrug repurposing, also referred to as drug repositioning or drug reprofiling, is a scientific approach to the detection of any new application for an already approved or investigational drug. It is a useful policy for the invention and development of new pharmacological or therapeutic applications of different drugs. The strategy has been known to offer numerous advantages over developing a completely novel drug for certain problems. Drug repurposing has numerous methodologies that can be categorized as target-oriented, dr...

Overview of U.S. COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance systems
This report describes the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring systems and programs used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Indian Health Service. Using the adverse event of myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination as a model, we demonstrate how the multiple, complementary monitoring systems worked to rapidly detect, assess, and verify a vaccine safety signal. In addition, longer-term follow-up was conducted to evaluate the recovery status of myocarditis cases following vaccin...

Ecotourism or ecological concerns? Tracing the impact of economic policy uncertainty and natural resources on tourism-driven ecological footprints
This study applies a novel dynamic ARDL simulation approach for long-run and short-run analyses. The study also employs frequency-domain causality to check the causal relationship between the variables. The result reveals that tourism has a positive effect on the ecological footprint. Similarly, economic policy uncertainty has a positive and significant effect on the ecological footprint in India during the sample period. Additionally, natural resource rent shows a positive effect on the ecological footprint or deteriorating environmental quality in the short and long run in the sample period. However, renewable energy con...
