Int J Lab Hematol. 2024 Mar 19. doi: 10.1111/ijlh.14267. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe hemoglobin (Hb) variants are qualitative abnormalities due to production of structurally abnormal globin proteins. They are categorized based on the type of mutation present in the α1, α2, β, Gγ, Aγ and δ globin genes. So far, more than 1550 Hb variants are reported in the database. They could lead to Hb polymerization, Hb instability, altered oxygen affinity and decreased oxygen-carrying capacity of Hb or have no clinical manifestations. In India, ethnic diversity, consanguinity, regional variations and migration result in the...

Giant Submucosal Fibromatosis of the Base of Tongue Presenting as Paediatric Obstuctive Sleep Apnoea: A Rare Case Report
AbstractA nodular lesion of the tongue encompasses a range of conditions, from reactive to malignant. It can be challenging to diagnose when a solitary and firm submucosal mass appears in the oral cavity. Following an essential investigation protocol is necessary for reaching a definitive diagnosis. Leiomyomas are benign tumors that infrequently occur in the oral cavity and typically affect individuals between their forties and fifties. This case report presents a rare and unique case of a giant submucosal fibromatosis located at the base of the tongue in a 3-year-old child presenting with features of pediatric OSA. Immuno...

An Unusual Case Report of a Foreign Body (Fish Bone) in the Trachea
AbstractTracheobronchial foreign body aspiration is a rare yet potentially life-threatening occurrence in adults, presenting with symptoms ranging from acute asphyxiation to coughing, breathlessness, or choking. These symptoms can be inconsistent and mimic chronic lung conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Chest X-rays and computed tomography scans are valuable for diagnosing and locating the foreign body. However, bronchoscopy is the primary method for diagnosis and management. This case study describes a unique incident involving a fish bone lodged in the mid-trachea, emphasizing the critical i...

Associations Between Social Deprivation, Cognitive Heath, and Depression among Older Adults in India: Evidence from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI)
ConclusionThe findings suggest that high social deprivation is associated with depression and cognitive health decline. Policymakers and planners should devise policies  for elderly people to reduce social isolation and include leisure activities in their daily lives. Free health insurance and specialist care for the elderly can relieve the stress of paying for their healthcare at older ages and improve their mental and cognitive health.
