Midurethral sling dominates female SUI treatment

Analysis of US data reveals that the midurethral sling for female stress urinary incontinence has been widely adopted over the past decade, and this is the primary reason for a decline in the use of traditional surgical techniques for the condition.

Bowel management programs (BMPs) are a well-established clinical strategy used to remedy life-altering fecal incontinence and severe constipation in children with anorectal malformations (ARMs), Hirschsprung's disease, myelomeningoceles, spina bifida, other neurogenic bowel disorders, and functional constipation [1-11]. During BMPs, patients are treated with tailored bowel regimens including laxative medications and antegrade or retrograde enemas and assessed with abdominal x-rays and patient-reported information to achieve improvements in constipation or incontinence.

CONCLUSION: Postoperative complication rates in patients with benign colorectal disease remain an area of concern for surgical patient safety. In this pilot study on 22 selected patients, taIPAA was associated with two patients developing anastomotic leakage. Future large-scale validation studies are required to determine the safety and feasibility of taIPAA in patients with ulcerative colitis.PMID:34537080 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-021-00306-5

Photo credit Sander Weeteling Dear Carol: My mom had younger-onset Alzheimer’s and my dad had Lewy body dementia, so I’ve spent years as a dementia caregiver. I don’t regret what I did for them, but I don’t want to put that worry on my own kids. I’m 60-years-old and try to live a healthy lifestyle, but every time I misstate an idea, forget a word, or neglect to do something routine, I wonder. Is this it? Is this the first sign? I can even see the concern in my kids’ faces when I do something a little off. I know that others with this genetic risk have the same fears. How do they handle t...

BJOG. 2021 Sep 18. doi: 10.1111/1471-0528.16930. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSynthetic midurethral slings (MUS) for the management of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) have come under intense scrutiny of late. The NICE (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence) guidelines for the management of urinary incontinence over the past 15 years have continued to be cautious in their recommendations of the obturator MUS whilst being supportive of the retropubic (RP) MUS. In the 2006 NICE clinical guidance (CG 40), the advice was to make women aware of the "lack of long-term data" for obturator MUS. In 2013 (...

AbstractBackgroundIn the absence of head-to-head trials, we performed an indirect treatment comparison of the β3-adrenergic agonists vibegron and mirabegron in the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB).MethodsPubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for articles related to phase  3, double-blind, controlled trials of vibegron 75 mg and mirabegron 25/50 mg in patients with OAB. Efficacy outcomes included change from baseline at weeks 4, 12, and 52 in mean daily number of total urinary incontinence episodes and micturitions and mean volume voided/micturition. Effect size was computed as pla...

Conclusions: Facial melanosis as a result of contact dermatitis can be confused with other acquired dermatological conditions causing hyperpigmentation. Therefore, a detailed history of contact with allergens has to be elicited, and if found relevant, has to be confirmed by patch testing.

Sure, incontinence is inconvenient. It's a hassle to change when out ad about, supplies cost money, and people worry about if they have leaked on their clothes. But by far the worst of it is the social stigma. Even people with other serious disbilities often say that their incontinence is the worse because it's so embarrassing. It doesn't have to be this way but society will hang on to its poorly educated judgment. This is the reason that Egosan has launched a support group for people living with incontinence.  Continue reading on Egosancares to learn more about living with incontinence and the value of support: Mindi...
