Br J Radiol. 2021 Sep 19:20201005. doi: 10.1259/bjr.20201005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis commentary reviews the contribution of imaging by CT and MRI to functional assessment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). CT can help individualize the assessment of COPD by quantifying emphysema, air trapping and airway wall thickening, potentially leading to more specific treatments for these distinct components of COPD. Longitudinal changes in these metrics can help assess progression or improvement. On hyperpolarized gas MRI, the apparent diffusion coefficient of provides an index of airspace enlargement reflec...

-Soo Jang Air pollutants include toxic particles and gases emitted in large quantities from many different combustible materials. They also include particulate matter (PM) and ozone, and biological contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which can penetrate the human airway and reach the bloodstream, triggering airway inflammation, dysfunction, and fibrosis. Pollutants that accumulate in the lungs exacerbate symptoms of respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Asthma, a heterogeneous disease with complex pathological mechanisms, is characterized by particular symptoms su...

The most consequential early complication is anastomotic leak, which can be managed with percutaneous drainage or reoperation, depending on the patient's clinical status. Other early complications include anastomotic bleeding, surgical site infection, ileus, postoperative urinary retention, and stoma-related complications. Most stoma-related complications can be managed without reoperation. Late complications, such as bowel dysfunct...

Sexual function is often affected in subjects living with chronic illness especially COPD. However the effect of COPD on sexual satisfaction is underappreciated in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to evaluate the disease’s impact on patient’s sexuality and the explanatory variables of sexual dissatisfaction.On-line questionnaires were submitted on the association BPCO website and to e-mailing list. Data about sexual well-being (Arizona Sexual Experience Scale, ASEX), Quality of life (VQ11), anxiety and depression (Hospitalized anxiety and depression, HAD) and declared COPD stage were collected.Seven ...

Olympic athletes have a secret that most mere mortals just don't get. And it's the same secret that can make you a gold-medal superstar in bed.  I'm talking about oxygen.  Olympians understand that every cell in your body is designed to burn oxygen. Cut back on oxygen and all cellular processes slow down. You start to become tired or short of breath. So, high concentrations of oxygen in every cell in your body makes the difference between a gold medal and an "also ran."  It's the same for you in just about every part of your life. With plenty of oxygen, your body pulses with energy....

Abstract Sexual dysfunction is a common problem in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to assess the presence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in COPD patients. Ninety-three outpatients who had been diagnosed as COPD and followed in Bolvadin State Hospital, Afyon, Turkey, were included in the study. All patients underwent pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gas analysis. They completed International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Medical Research Council (MRC) Dyspnea Scale, Short Form 36-item Scale (SF-36), and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) Questionnaire. The mean...
