AbstractAutomatic grading of retinal blood vessels from fundus image can be a useful tool for diagnosis, planning and treatment of eye. Automatic diagnosis of retinal images for early detection of glaucoma, stroke, and blindness is emerging in intelligent health care system. The method primarily depends on various abnormal signs, such as area of hard exudates, area of blood vessels, bifurcation points, texture, and entropies. The development of an automated screening system based on vessel width, tortuosity, and vessel branching are also used for grading. However, the automated method that directly can come to a decision b...

AbstractPurposeAs filler procedures have increased in popularity, serious injection-related complications (e.g., blindness and stroke) have also increased in number. Proper and effective training is important for filler procedure safety; however, limitations exist in traditional training methods (i.e. anatomical illustrations and cadaver studies). We aimed to describe the development process and evaluate the usability of a virtual reality (VR)-based aesthetic filler injection training system.Materials and MethodsWe developed the virtual reality hardware for the training system and a short guide, with a lecture regarding sa...

(CNN) — Cinnamon may improve blood sugar control in people with a condition known as prediabetes and may slow the progression to type 2 diabetes, according to a new pilot study of 51 people with elevated blood sugars. “We are looking for safe, durable and cost-effective approaches to reduce the progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes,” said study author Dr. Giulio Romeo, a staff physician at Boston’s Joslin Diabetes Center and the division of endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The study published Tuesday in the Journal of the Endocrine Society. “Our 12-week study sh...

In conclusion, sitting for prolonged periods of time without interruption is unfavorably associated with DBP and HDL cholesterol. Exercise Slows Inappropriate Growth of Blood Vessels in a Mouse Model of Macular Degeneration https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/07/exercise-slows-inappropriate-growth-of-blood-vessels-in-a-mouse-model-of-macular-degeneration/ Excessive growth of blood vessels beneath the retina is a proximate cause of blindness in conditions such as macular degeneration. Researchers here provide evidence for physical activity to be influential in the pace at which this process of tissue...

AbstractSummaryThe risks for hip fracture and vertebral fracture, but not the risk for distal radius fracture, were significantly higher in the blindness group than in the control group with a maximum 12-year follow-up.PurposeTo evaluate the influence of visual impairment on the risk for osteoporotic fractures at common sites: hip, thoracic/lumbar vertebra, and distal radius.MethodsThis longitudinal follow-up study used a database of a national sample cohort from 2002 to 2013 provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Of a total of 1,125,691 subjects, 3918 patients with visual impairment and age ≥ 50 year...

The objective of this review article is to provide the general ophthalmologists with information on how to recognize the symptoms and to best manage these patients. The management is to investigate for the cause of the transient monocular visual loss and to apply secondary prevention to address atherosclerotic risk factors to prevent further ischemic events like a stroke.

This study examined domestic energy usage and its health implication on residents of Ese ‐Odo and Okitipupa Local Government Areas (LGA), of Ondo State. Systematic random sampling was used to select 103 and 156 respondents in Ese‐Odo and Okitipupa LGA, respectively. It was established that environmental and socio‐economic related attributes influenced residents' choice of domestic energy type. Similarly, burns, blindness, stroke, cataract and pulmonary diseases were the most prevalent self‐reported ill‐health. A relatively weak correlation between domestic energy usage and ill‐health is experienced by the resid...
