Association study between autistic-like traits and polymorphisms in the autism candidate regions RELN, CNTNAP2, SHANK3, and CDH9/10

Conclusions: Our results do not suggest that the investigated genes, which previously has been found associated with ASD diagnosis, have any major influence on ALTs in children from the general population.

ConclusionsExamination of plots of the significant interactions suggested higher levels of negative parenting may exacerbate later behavioral problems and lower levels of negative parenting may protect against later behavioral problems for children with less severe ASD symptoms but not for those with more severe ASD symptoms. Results have implications for interventions targeting parenting practices for children with ASD.

Although substance use disorder (SUD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are highly comorbid with other mental disorders and commonly have onset during childhood,1 little attention has been paid to their overlap. Despite limited data suggesting that up to 4% of patients with ASD also have substance-related problems,2 there are no existing guidelines, protocols, or tailored resources focused on SUD in young people with co-occurring ASD. This is concerning given that the simultaneous presence of these disorders presents unique challenges that complicate clinical care. In particular, many of the symptoms of ASD can interfere ...

Haven, Breanne Wilhite, Chi-Hsiu Liu, Jing Chen, Joseph R. HibbelnAbstractDeficiency in retinoid acid receptor-related orphan receptor alpha (RORα) of staggerer mice results in extensive granule and Purkinje cell loss in the cerebellum as well as in learned motor deficits, cognition impairments and perseverative tendencies that are commonly observed in autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). The effects of RORα on brain lipid metabolism associated with...

Authors: Mellema C, Treacher A, Nguyen K, Montillo A Abstract The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a subjective process requiring clinical expertise in neurodevelopmental disorders. Since such expertise is not available at many clinics, automated diagnosis using machine learning (ML) algorithms would be of great value to both clinicians and the imaging community to increase the diagnoses' availability and reproducibility while reducing subjectivity. This research systematically compares the performance of classifiers using over 900 subjects from the IMPAC database [1], using the database's derived ana...

Knorth, Tom A. van Yperen, Marinus SpreenAbstractTwo instruments were developed and examined to enable treatment evaluation for art therapy (AT) with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). One instrument is the OAT-A (Observation in Art Therapy with a child diagnosed ASD), the other the EAT-A (Evaluation of actions of the Art Therapist during treatment of a child diagnosed ASD). Both scales were refined in a three round procedure. In each round raters (art therapists and students) observed and c...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe review what is known about how pre-linguistic vocal differences in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) unfold across development and consider whether vocalization features can serve as useful diagnostic indicators.Recent FindingsDifferences in the frequency and acoustic quality of several vocalization types (e.g., babbles and cries) during the first year of life are associated with later ASD diagnosis. Paralinguistic features (e.g., prosody) measured during early and middle childhood can accurately classify current ASD diagnosis using cross-validated machine learning approaches.SummaryPre-linguistic ...

Authors: Brodowski L, Büter W, Kohls F, Hillemanns P, von Kaisenberg C, Dammann O Abstract Maternal overweight and obesity are prenatal risk factors for obstetrical complications, preterm birth, neonatal morbidity as well as cognitive and behavioural developmental disorders in children. Paediatric morbidity and mortality as well as child development disorders are significantly associated with maternal obesity. Particularly in the neurodevelopmental and psychiatric area, it is becoming increasingly clear that, in children of mothers with an increased body mass index (BMI), there is a high correlation with child...
