There Should Be Grandeur: Basic Science in the Shadow of the Sequester

Just before any predictable disaster hits, it's almost impossible to take even a medium term view. With the sequester bearing down on us in a couple of days, identifying the immediate consequences is terrifying enough. Just check out the Obama administration's state-by-state list of the grim weeks ahead. The picture derived from that tally is evil enough, as we all (or should) know by now. In broad strokes , it will slow the recovery, cut economic growth, and act as a persistent drag on ordinary folks' attempts to make a better life -- hell, to pay the rent on the first of the month. But there is a sense, I think, that however crappy conditions may get for the weeks or months before some resolution emerges, matters will return to normal in reasonably short order. [More]

Authors: Lougiaki P, Tsolaki M, Pantazaki A Abstract Neurovascular dysfunction is a central process in the pathogenesis of the stroke and most neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. The multi-cell neurovascular unit (NVU) combines the components of the neural, vascular and extracellular matrix (ECM) into an important interface whose proper function is critical to maintaining brain health. Tissue engineering now offers new tools and information to promote understanding of NVU's operation. A promising area for the development of NVU models is their bio-production through 3D bio-printing to produce...

Authors: Paraskevas GP Abstract Hereditary types of ischemic cerebral subcortical small vessel disease (SSVD) are rare, usually autosomal dominant, diseases, due to an abnormality in vessel wall synthesis. They may present with various combinations of migraine with aura, ischemic events (transient ischemic attacks, lacunar strokes) and progressively worsening ischemic lesion load in brain imaging. Eventually, vascular cognitive impairment (usually of the frontal-subcortical type) develops, frequently accompanied by behavioral-psychiatric symptoms and bilateral pyramidal and pseudobulbar signs leading to severe disa...

CONCLUSION:: We demonstrated that CCAP, a "risk factor" for future stroke and "risk indicator" of future myocardial infarction is seen significantly more often detected on the PIs of older male patients with PAD than among those without. Dentists treating patients with PAD must be uniquely vigilant for the presence of CCAPs on their patients' PI. PMID: 30875245 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

My colleagues and I in the tobacco control movement have based our entire careers on the principle that it is wrong to lie to the public. The bulk of our campaign against Big Tobacco was based on the contention that the cigarette companies lied to the public about the health risks of smoking. Numerous lawsuits were filed against Big Tobacco, seeking damages based on the claim that the companies are responsible because they misrepresented the health effects of their products, thus preventing smokers from making an informed choice. The name of the major youth anti-tobacco campaign is called " Truth. " Clearly, hone...

CONCLUSION: In this study, LVV was an independent predictor of relapse and GC dependence. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine if patients with LVV require a different treatment approach. PMID: 30877210 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Euxanthone is a xanthone compound extracted from Polygala caudata, and shows vasodilatory action. The aim of this study was to determine the potential pharmacological effects of euxanthone against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced endothelial cell injury.Material and methodsHuman umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were expo...
