Conclusions: We found no association between weekend admission and 30-day readmissions, providing indirect evidence of homogeneity in the quality of care delivered during week day and weekend admissions.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2019;9:66 –71

This study aimed to assess the time course of hemodynamic patterns of cortical sensorimotor areas using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and motor recovery within three months after a stroke. METHOD: Eight right-handed first ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke patients (60±8 years, 3 women) with mild to severe hemiparesis were examined with repetitive fNIRS measurements and motor recovery tests (Fugl-Meyer score) during two months. Hemodynamic changes over the ipsilesional and contralesional sensorimotor areas were collected from a multi-channel fNIRS system during intermittent isometric muscle contractions...

CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that infusion of muscimol into the contralateral motor cortex during the repair stage could partially improve the behavioral performances without promoting axonal growth from uninjured hemisphere motor cortex to the denervated striatum and spinal cord, nor did it prevent the expression of axonal growth inhibitors in peri-lesioned cortex. More detailed studies will be required to clarify the role of GABAA Rs in regulating the behavioral recovery after a stroke. PMID: 31227671 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ng Yang Pinocembrin is one of the most abundant flavonoids in propolis, and it may also be widely found in a variety of plants. In addition to natural extraction, pinocembrin can be obtained by biosynthesis. Biosynthesis efficiency can be improved by a metabolic engineering strategy and a two-phase pH fermentation strategy. Pinocembrin poses an interest for its remarkable pharmacological activities, such as neuroprotection, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammation. Studies have shown that pinocembrin works excellently in treating ischemic stroke. Pinocembrin can reduce nerve damage in the ischemic area and reduce mitochon...

AbstractPurpose of reviewThis review aims to support obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a risk factor for ischemic stroke, review treatment strategies for OSA, provide a comprehensive review of clinical data on OSA treatment and ischemic stroke risk, and to critically assess if treatment of OSA decreases the risk of ischemic stroke and if treatment improves outcomes and subsequent ischemic stroke risk in post-stroke patients.Recent findingsSeveral observational studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and meta-analyses have examined the risk of ischemic stroke and cardiovascular events in patients with OSA and have also...

This study sought to investigate what could be learned from how these men have fared. The men were born in 1925-1928 and similar health-related data from questionnaires, physical examination, and blood samples are available for all surveys. Survival curves over various variable strata were applied to evaluate the impact of individual risk factors and combinations of risk factors on all-cause deaths. At the end of 2018, 118 (16.0%) of the men had reached 90 years of age. Smoking in 1974 was the strongest single risk factor associated with survival, with observed percentages of men reaching 90 years being 26.3, 25.7, ...

In this study, we used iTRAQ using 2D LC-MS/MS technology to investigate the cellular mechanisms governing the protective effects of NMT. The transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model was established and evaluated. The degree of cerebral ischemia was assessed through scoring for nerve injury symptoms and through the assessment of the areas of cerebral infarction. Brain tissues were subjected to analysis by iTRAQ. High-pH HPLC and RSLC-MS/MS analysis were performed to detect differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between the treatment groups (Sham, MCAO, and NMT). Bioinformatics were employed for data an...

Authors: Li X, Chu S, Liu Y, Chen N Abstract Rhubarb is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine; it has been used in China for thousands of years. Rhubarb anthraquinones are the major medicinal ingredients derived from rhubarb including emodin, aloe-emodin, chrysophanol, rhein, physcion, and danthron. These different anthraquinone derivatives alone or in combination play a therapeutic role in central nervous system diseases (CNSD), such as cerebral ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, brain tumor, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and others. We review the experimental studies on thes...
