AbstractPathological examination of a suckling male lamb showed severe viral pneumonia with suspected bacterial superinfection. Adenovirus was detected by immunohistochemical examination of the affected lung samples. Detection of the suspected adenovirus by PCR and subsequent isolation of the virus were successful. Using next-generation sequencing, the full genome of this ovine adenovirus was sequenced and analysed. A genome sequence comparison showed that it was a novel mastadenovirus type (named “ovine adenovirus 8”) that did not belong to any of the established adenovirus species. The genome is 36,206 bp lon...

In this study, two novel phages (ISF3 and ISF6) of a methylotrophicRaoultella strain were isolated from sewage. To characterize the isolated phages, morphological features, protein profiles, restriction digestion patterns, and partial genome sequences were studied. Despite morphological differences, electron microscopy revealed that both phages had an icosahedral capsid connected to a contractile tail, suggesting that ISF3 and ISF6 both belong to the familyMyoviridae. Partial nucleotide sequences of the ISF3 genome showed 99% to 100% identity to DNA ofKlebsiella pneumonia phages KP15, KP27 and BMBT1; however, the restricti...

His brand is crisis, so it can be hard to keep abreast of the various calamities President Trump stumbles into or deliberately courts. Now that tensions with Iran seem to have momentarily cooled, another recent episode of Trumpian brinksmanship, closer to home, deserves some attention before we lurch forward into new dangers.  As you ’ve surely heard, but may have already forgotten amid the fog of near-war, three weeks ago, President Trump threatened to declare yet another national emergency at the southern border. If Mexico didn’t sufficiently crack down on cross-border migration,Trump warned, he ’d...

DR M ASHRAF MANSOUR (Grand Rapids, MI): Dr Mayor and colleagues queried the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for carotid interventions between 2005 and 2015. They stopped collecting data after October 2015 because we switched to ICD-10 and they were afraid of contaminating their data. They found more than 1,242,000 patients in this database. These patients received either carotid endarterectomy or stent. Roughly 41.5% were women. Interestingly, only 11.3% were symptomatic. Their studies showed the highest rate of stroke in their patients was in symptomatic women having a carotid stent, followed by symptomatic women having an endarterectomy.

It is well known that the most commonly available forms of stem cell therapy produce benefits via signaling on the part of the transplanted cells, which soon die, rather than via any sort of integration of these cells into tissues. These treatments use varieties of what are called mesenchymal stem cells, which is actually a poorly defined, broad category. One clinic's mesenchymal stem cells are usually meaningfully different from those of the next. Nonetheless, these therapies fairly reliably reduce chronic inflammation. This can allow for improved regeneration in patients, but that outcome is much less reliable in practic...

By Jan LundiusSTOCKHOLM / ROME, Jun 24 2019 (IPS) Being a frequent visitor to the Dominican Republic, where I occasionally have enjoyed the high standard, security and excellent service of its resorts, I became puzzled by recent, quiet excessive media reactions to statistically insignificant cases of deaths in these resorts. The number of demises in Dominican resorts have been more or less the same over the years and do not at all differ from those of most other tourist destinations. People die in hotels all over the world. There may even be specific reasons for this and they are far from being unique to the Dominican Repu...
