ConclusionsThe increased risk of GDM in women with srPCOS was mostly attributed to overweight or obesity. Importantly, normal weight women with srPCOS did not seem to be at increased risk for developing GDM. However, hyperandrogenemia was associated with GDM even after adjustment for BMI. These findings strengthen the importance of weight management in reproductive ‐age women and suggest a noteworthy role of hyperandrogenemia in the pathophysiology of GDM.

Effects of Cardiac Sympathetic Neurodegeneration and PPARγ Activation on Rhesus Macaque Whole Blood miRNA and mRNA Expression Profiles. Biomed Res Int. 2020;2020:9426204 Authors: Metzger JM, Lopez MS, Schmidt JK, Murphy ME, Vemuganti R, Emborg ME Abstract Degeneration of sympathetic innervation of the heart occurs in numerous diseases, including diabetes, idiopathic REM sleep disorder, and Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD, cardiac sympathetic denervation occurs in 80-90% of patients and can begin before the onset of motor symptoms. Today, there are no disease-modifying therapies for cardiac sympa...

Regional efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 have so far proven successful. Image Credit: Pacific CommunityBy William W. EllisTORONTO, May 29 2020 (IPS) By now, the impact of COVID19 on our daily lives has been well documented, especially in advanced economies. Anxiety about the future continues to grow everywhere. Much of the corporate news coverage we consume has focused on the toll this pandemic will take on mainland countries. In this study, the structure-activity relationship of this peptide was studied using alanine scanning. Four analogs; AQSPA, SASPA, SQAPA and SQSAA were designed and investigated for multifunctional antidiabetic effects. Molecular docking studies on human dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) suggested that the binding affinities were in the order; AQSPA>SASPA>SQSPA>SQSAA>SQAPA while for in vitro DPP-IV inhibitory activity, it was SQSPA>SQSAA>AQSPA>SASPA>SQAPA. Enzyme kinetic studies revealed that the peptides are uncompetitive inhibitors with the exception of SQSAA and SQSPA. In 3T3-L1 differentiated adi...

Abstract The two most common aging-related diseases, Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, are associated with accumulation of amyloid proteins (β-amyloid and amylin, respectively). This amylin aggregation is reportedly cytotoxic to neurons. We found that aggregation of human amylin (hAmylin) induced neuronal apoptosis without obvious microglial infiltration in vivo. High concentrations of hAmylin irreversibly aggregated on the surface of the neuronal plasma membrane. Long-term incubation with hAmylin induced morphological changes in neurons. Moreover, hAmylin permeabilized the neuronal membrane w...

ConclusionsSmoking during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk for GDM. Offspring birthweight is lowest in women, who continue smoking after the first trimester. If pregnancy is complicated by GDM, offspring birthweight is not influenced by smoking.

This study assesses the current practices of physicians in Lebanon routinely involved in ischemic stroke (IS) management. We conducted a prospective observational study of patients hospitalized at 8 different Lebanese hospitals in the period August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016, with a diagnosis of acute stroke. Baseline characteristics and data on diagnostic studies, as well as treatments received during hospitalization and at discharge, were collected and analyzed. Two hundred and three strokes/transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) were recorded but only 173 patients (85%) with ischemic events were included in the study. The pati...

ConclusionOnly 46.875% of the hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 had fever in the early stage; and diabetics may be the most susceptible population. A decrease in blood lymphocyte count and ground-glass opacity on chest CT scan is beneficial in identifying the high-risk population.
