Sleep Duration in Midlife and Later Life in Relation to Cognition

ObjectivesTo evaluate associations between sleep duration at midlife and later life and change in sleep duration over time and cognition in older women. DesignParticipants reported sleep duration in 1986 and 2000, and a subgroup of older participants began cognitive testing in 1995 to 2001; follow‐up testing was conducted three times, at 2‐year intervals. SettingProspective Nurses' Health Study cohort. ParticipantsFemale nurses aged 70 and older free of stroke and depression at the initial cognitive assessment (N = 15,385). MeasurementsValidated, telephone‐based cognitive battery to measure cognitive function; four repeated assessments over 6 years were averaged to estimate overall cognition at older ages, and trajectories of cognitive change were evaluated over follow up. ResultsExtreme sleep durations in later life were associated with worse average cognition (P

This study sought to investigate what could be learned from how these men have fared. The men were born in 1925-1928 and similar health-related data from questionnaires, physical examination, and blood samples are available for all surveys. Survival curves over various variable strata were applied to evaluate the impact of individual risk factors and combinations of risk factors on all-cause deaths. At the end of 2018, 118 (16.0%) of the men had reached 90 years of age. Smoking in 1974 was the strongest single risk factor associated with survival, with observed percentages of men reaching 90 years being 26.3, 25.7, ...

Abstract Background: Chronic migraine with medication overuse headache (CM-MOH) is the most common type of chronic migraine, and it increases risk of stroke and white matter lesions. These pathologic changes could induce cognitive decline. However, the alteration of cognitive function in CM-MOH patients is not established. Therefore, we took this study to reveal the cognitive performances in CM-MOH. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2015 and January 2017. Patients were divided into CM-MOH, CMwoMOH (chronic migraine without medication overuse), and MO (migraine without aura) gr...

AbstractCathepsin-A-related arteriopathy with strokes and leukoencephalopathy (CARASAL) is an acronym that describes an ultra-rare, hereditary, cerebral small vessel disease. The aim is to summarize current knowledge and recent findings concerning phenotype, genotype, pathogenesis, diagnoses, and treatment options of CARASAL. The method used in the study is a systematic literature review. CARASAL is clinically characterized by a wide range of predominantly central nervous system abnormalities. These include migraine, stroke with central facial palsy, facial pain, non-positional vertigo, cognitive dysfunction with impaired ...

Many of us have a narrow view of therapy. We think it’s solely for navigating clinical depression or severe anxiety or roller-coaster moods. We think it’s only an option when we’re going through a major crisis, a big transition, or a prolonged, persistent period of grief. We think therapy is only an option when relationships become disconnected, and marriages are on the brink of divorce. While therapy is important and vital for all the above, it’s also helpful for a lot of other reasons, and you don’t have to wait until the walls are falling down to work with a clinician. You can go when the p...

Goal: Stroke survivors commonly experience depression as well as deficits in physical and cognition function. Emerging evidence also suggests sleep quality is compromised poststroke. Our primary objective was to examine the association of subjective sleep parameters (ie, total PSQI score) with depression, health related quality of life, physical function, and cognition among stroke survivors. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 72 older adults with chronic stroke ( ≥6 months postischemic stroke) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of exercise or cognitive enrichment.
