Angola: Namibe Reports Fewer Cases of Malaria

[ANGOP]Namibe -At least 18, 826 cases of malaria were recorded in the first quarter of 2014, in the south-west province of Namibe, said the local Public Health Department for Control of Endemic Diseases.

Clinical manifestation of malaria is mainly due to intra-erythrocytic development of Plasmodium parasites. Plasmodium falciparum merozoites, the invasive form of the blood-stage parasite, invade human erythrocytes in a complex but rapid process. This multi-step progression involves interactions between parasite and human host proteins. Here we show that antibodies against a vaccine antigen, PfGAMA, co-immunoprecipitate with PfMSP10. This interaction was validated as direct by surface plasmon resonance analysis. We then demonstrate that antibodies against PfMSP10 have growth inhibitory activity against cultured parasites, w...

The objective of the study is to investigate the genetic diversity of P. vivax circulating in Southern Thailand by using 3 antigenic markers and 8 microsatellite markers. Dried blood spots were collected from Chumphon, Phang Nga, Ranong and, Surat Thani provinces of Thailand. By PCR, 3 distinct sizes of PvMSP3α, 2 sizes of PvMSP3β and 2 sizes of PvMSP1 F2 were detected based on the length of PCR products, respectively. PCR/RFLP analyses of these antigen genes revealed high levels of genetic diversity. The genotyping of 8 microsatellite loci showed high genetic diversity as indicated by high alleles per locus and...

In conclusion, while travelling to endemic countries, people should be informed about the importance of malaria prophylaxis and prophylaxis should be commenced immediately and continued appropriately. Additionally, malaria should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of high fever for the patients who admitted to the hospital with a travelling history to these countries. In conclusion, land covers derived from anthropic activities favored the presence and abundance of the main malaria vectors; but, regardless of differences in landscape, unknown specific factors varying among localities lead to a unique configuration in each site that directly shaped anopheline community composition locally. This information is essential for the development of malaria risk maps and for the design of integrated vector control interventions that include the recognition of the landscape features favoring human-vector contact. Malaria is the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Pakistan is considered as a moderate malaria-endemic country but still, 177 million individuals are at risk of malaria. Roughly 60% of Pakistan ’s populati...

Abstract Plasmodium vivax, the chronic relapsing human malaria parasite with the most widespread distribution, possesses proteins associated with the merozoite surface that could be targets for host immune responses and potential vaccine candidates. Of these, the merozoite surface protein 3 of P. vivax (PvMSP3) is an attractive vaccine target as well as a genetic marker for epidemiological surveillance. PvMSP3 comprises a group of protein members encoded by a multigene family. Although some protein members, i.e. PvMSP3α and PvMSP3β, have been targets for molecular and immunological investigations, the m...

Abstract Like most malaria-endemic countries, Mozambique relies on tabulation of confirmed malaria test-positive febrile patients to track incidence of malaria. However, this approach is potentially biased by incidental malaria parasitemia in patients with fever of another etiology. We compared pan-Plasmodium aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase and Plasmodium falciparum HRP2 antigen concentrations measured using a laboratory bead-based assay of samples collected from 1,712 febrile and afebrile patients of all ages in Maputo, Zambézia, and Cabo Delgado provinces. We used a Bayesian latent class model to estim...
