Abstract Vaccines are excellent investments with far-reaching rewards beyond individual and population health, but their introduction into national programs has been historically slow in Africa. We provide an overview of the introduction of new and underutilized vaccines in countries of the WHO African Region by 2017, using data from the WHO-UNICEF Joint Reporting Form. ConclusionsWhen considering the introduction of a new vaccine in the NIP, BoD is usually estimated in isolation. The current approach assesses BoD in relation to other vaccine-preventable diseases' BoD, which may help national advisory committees on immunisation and policymakers to set vaccination priorities. (Meningitis Research Foundation) The global disease burden of meningitis remains unacceptably high, and progress lags substantially behind that of other vaccine-preventable diseases. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Global Burden of Disease study showed that meningitis deaths reduced by just 21 percent globally between 1990-2016, whereas other preventable diseases such as measles, tetanus, and diarrhea due to rotavirus saw declines of 93 percent, 90.7 percent, and 57.9 percent, respectively, suggesting that progress in meningitis could have been substantially faster.
