Real-Time PCR studies regarding the borrelia burgdorferi, francisella tularensis, tick borne encephalitis virus (TBEv) and crimeean congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFv) occurrence in the Romanian ticks

Background: Our studies undertaken between 2006-2015 have shown that the most frequent species of ticks in Romania is Ixodes ricinus. It was found that I. ricinus is the main vector in Romania for the Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and for the TBEv, but no data were available for Francisella tularensis and CCHFv infectious agents occurrence into I.ricinus and Hyalomma sp.

is the most common tick-borne illness in the USA and Europe. Pathogens involved include Borrelia burgdorferi in the USA and B. afzelii and B. garinii in Europe. The characteristic rash of erythema migrans occurs in 70 –80% of patients. Neurological disease, including facial palsy, meningo-encephalitis, aseptic meningitis and polyradiculopathy, occurs in 10–15%. Cardiac disease, primarily manifest as heart block, is seen in 1–4%. Arthritis is a late complication in about 30% of untreated patients.

Abstract Companion animals can become infected with tick-borne diseases (TBDs) and can become hosts of transmission to humans, thereby damaging human health. To clarify whether companion animals are infested by ticks harboring TBD pathogens in humans, we detected TBD pathogens in ticks collected from dogs and cats brought to animal hospitals in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
