An initial fMRI study on neural correlates of prayer in members of Alcoholics Anonymous.
CONCLUSION: AA members' prayer was associated with a relative reduction in self-reported craving and with concomitant engagement of neural mechanisms that reflect control of attention and emotion. These findings suggest neural processes underlying the apparent effectiveness of AA prayer. PMID: 27015258 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Introduction: Our previous community-based study demonstrated that some individuals with AVIM [asymptomatic ventriculomegaly with features of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)] progressed to iNPH in several years. In this hospital-based study, we investigated the progression rate from AVIM to iNPH and its possible predictors. Methods: We conducted a prospective study of participants with AVIM from several medical institutions/hospitals in Japan. AVIM is defined as “asymptomatic ventriculomegaly with features of iNPH on MRI”; in the present study, asymptomatic was...
Conclusions: Higher value in percent increase in FAR is positively associated with higher level of IHTG percent value at 6 months in children with baseline NAFLD. FAR could be a potential biomarker to monitor the changes in IHTG in children with NAFLD.
Conclusions: Central auditory speech processing in the presence of both vascular burden and pure-tone average may not be related to brain volumes and white matter microstructure. Longitudinal follow-up is needed to explore these relationships thoroughly.
Background: Currently the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is based on weight loss through lifestyle changes, such as exercise combined with calorie-restricted dieting. Objectives: To assess the effects of a commercially available weight loss program based on a very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and liver fat content compared to a standard low-calorie (LC) diet. As a secondary aim, we evaluated the effect on liver stiffness measurements. Methods: Open, randomized controlled, prospective pilot study. Patients were randomized and treated either with an LC or a VLCKD a...
To compare the performance of multi-echo chemical-shift-encoded (MECSE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) proton density fat fraction (PDFF) estimation, considering three different fat frequency peak combinations, for the quantification of steatosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Conclusion: This case shows that FAD should be considered in neonates with rare neurological diseases as porencephaly. In neonates and infants born to a mother who did not report alcohol use, EtG measure in hairs can significantly improve diagnosis of FASD, so allowing to exclude genetic diseases associated with similar clinical findings.
Conclusions Tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption contributed more to variance in IPFD than IHFD and SMFD. Smoking contributed more than drinking to variance in IPFD. The daily amount of tobacco smoked appeared to be more important than years of smoking for IPFD.
Conclusions: The concomitant occurrence of a PDAC, pseudocyst, and NET has not been previously reported. We suggest that if a pancreatic cyst is found, the coincidental occurrence of a malignant tumor should be considered, especially if the carbohydrate antigen 19–9 level is increased. Additionally, dilation of the pancreatic duct may be a diagnostic clue. Furthermore, the simultaneous occurrence of pancreatic endocrine and exocrine tumors is very uncommon. Preoperative diagnosis becomes difficult because of the lack of specific symptoms and radiological features.
CONCLUSION: The four investigated NAFLD scores performed differently in the populationbased vs high-risk setting. FLI was preferable in the population-based setting, while LFS performed best in the high-risk setting. PMID: 32685107 [PubMed]
AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the associations of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) with changes in knee cartilage composition and joint structure over 48 months, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI).Materials and methodsA total of 1126 participants with right knee Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) score 0 –2 at baseline, no history of rheumatoid arthritis, blood pressure measurements at baseline, and cartilage T2 measurements at baseline and 48 months were selected from the OAI. Cartilage composition was assessed using MRI T2 measuremen...
