The direct and indirect costs associated with endometriosis: a systematic literature review

This study was funded by AbbVie, which also develops the oral GnRH antagonist elagolix (in collaboration with Neurocrine Biosciences) for the management of endometriosis and uterine fibroids. A.M.S. is an employee of AbbVie and currently owns AbbVie stocks. H.Y., E.X.D. and C.K. are employees of Analysis Group, Inc., which has received consultancy fees from AbbVie. C.W. is a Clinical Professor at the Department Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, USA and has served in a consulting role to AbbVie for this project.

ConclusionsBeyond our expectations, infertile endometriosis women showed to feel more understood and supported than the others. Possible explanations and implications are discussed.RésuméObjectifsLe but de cette étude était d’explorer si les femmes atteintes d’infertilité liée à l’endométriose avaient des scores psychologiques, sexuels et relationnels moins satisfaisants par rapport à l’endométriose sans infertilité.MéthodesSoixante-onze femmes atteintes d’endométriose (32 avec infertilité as...

CONCLUSION: There is good reliability between the TVS and IOMs of the distance between rectosigmoid DE and the anal verge. As a consequence TVS could be useful for estimation of the height of the final surgical anastomosis in women undergoing full thickness resection for rectosigmoid DE. This is of pivotal importance regarding the risk of complications and temporary stoma use and could improve patient counseling. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Abstract Objectives: The aims of the study were to correlate endometriosis-associated pain, evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, with serum levels of etonogestrel (ENG), levonorgestrel (LNG), CA-125 and soluble CD23 in users of the ENG implant or the 52-mg LNG-releasing intrauterine system (52 mg LNG-IUS) for up to 2 years after device placement. Methods: A randomised trial was conducted at the University of Campinas Medical School, Brazil. All participants (n = 103) had had endometriosis-associated chronic pelvic pain or dysmenorrhoea, or both, for more than 6 months. Participants ...

We report a case which, to our knowledge, is the first report of the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-antagonist elagolix having a debulking effect on a uterine adenomyoma. Adenomyosis of the uterus, the presence of endometrial glands and stroma within myometrial tissues, may manifest as diffuse uterine adenomyosis in which case endometrial cells are interspersed within the myometrium, or as the uterine adenomyoma which is a focal uterine mass comprised of adenomyotic cells [1]. Medical management of uterine adenomyoma follows the same rationale as medical management of endometriosis, whereby endometriotic cell prolif...

Abstract Vitamin D, an essential steroid hormone in the human body, plays important roles in not only regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, but also various physiological processes, such as cell differentiation and apoptosis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Vitamin D receptor is widely distributed in male and female reproductive systems, suggesting that vitamin D is essential for fertility. Because vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent around the world, this review aims to discuss the potential functions of vitamin D in male and female reproductive systems and the associations between vitamin D...

AbstractNext-generation sequencing has enabled patient selection for targeted drugs, some of which have shown remarkable efficacy in cancers that have the cognate molecular signatures. Intriguingly, rapidly emerging data indicate that altered genes representing oncogenic drivers can also be found in sporadic non-malignant conditions, some of which have negligible and/or low potential for transformation to cancer. For instance, activatingKRAS mutations are discerned in endometriosis and in brain arteriovenous malformations, inactivatingTP53 tumor suppressor mutations in rheumatoid arthritis synovium, andAKT,MAPK, andAMPK pa...

Authors: Vigueras Smith A, Cabrera R, Kondo W, Ferreira H Abstract The present review aims to analyse the current data available on the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of the minimally invasive surgical (MIS) treatment of diaphragmatic endometriosis (DE). Through the use of PubMed and Google Scholar database, we conducted a literature review of all available research related to diagnosis and treatment of DE, focussed on the minimally invasive techniques. The studies were selected independently by two authors according to the aim of this review. DE is an under-diagnosed disease affecting between 0.1% and 1.5% ...
