Authors: Mancuso R, Sicurella M, Agostini S, Marconi P, Clerici M Abstract Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia worldwide, is a multifactorial disease with a still unknown etiology. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) has long been suspected to be one of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Areas covered: We review the literature focusing on viral characteristics of HSV-1, the mechanisms this virus uses to infect neural cells, its interaction with the host immune system and genetic background and summarizes results and research that support the hypothesis of an ass...

This study was aimed at describing the pathologic changes of nonlymphomatous gastrointestinal EBV lymphoproliferative diseases in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised settings; the former was focused on chronic active EBV infection, and the latter was about the infection in posttransplantation patients. A retrospective search identified a total of 26 cases of EBV lymphoproliferative disease in the gastrointestinal tract—8 in immunocompetent patients and 18 in immunocompromised patients. We found that there was no difference in pathologic findings in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, which ranged f...

Viruses, Vol. 11, Pages 756: Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1–Encoded miR-H2-3p Manipulates Cytosolic DNA–Stimulated Antiviral Innate Immune Response by Targeting DDX41 Viruses doi: 10.3390/v11080756 Authors: Yongzhong Duan Jieyuan Zeng Shengtao Fan Yun Liao Min Feng Lichun Wang Ying Zhang Qihan Li Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), one of the human pathogens widely epidemic and transmitted among various groups of people in the world, often causes symptoms known as oral herpes or lifelong asymptomatic infection. HSV-1 employs many sophisticated strategies to escape host antiviral immune respo...

Among these viruses, Bourbon virus (BRBV) is one of the several human-infecting members, which emerged in the US in recent years and caused human deaths. Here, we report the crystal structure of the BRBV envelope glycoprotein in the postfusion conformation. The structure adopts the typical fold of a class III viral fusion protein and ...

Myalgic encephalomyelitis, also referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating disease characterized by myalgia and a sometimes severe limitation of physical activity and cognition. It is exacerbated by physical and mental activity. Its cause is unknown, but frequently starts with an infection. The eliciting infection (commonly infectious mononucleosis or an upper respiratory infection) can be more or less well diagnosed. Among the human herpesviruses (HHV-1-8), HHV-4 (Epstein-Barr virus; EBV), HHV-6 (including HHV-6A and HHV-6B) and HHV-7, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ME/CFS. It was ther...

CpHV-1 infection in goats could represent a useful homologous animal model for the study of HSV-2 infection, chiefly for the assessment of antiviral drugs in in vivo...
