'Women have been woefully neglected': does medical science have a gender problem?
Women ’s symptoms are ignored and their health problems are under-researched. What’s going wrong? When Lynn Enright had a hysteroscopy to examine the inside of the womb, her searing pain was dismissed by medical professionals. She only understood why when she started working on her book on female anatomy, Vagina: A Re-education. She was looking for research on pain and women ’s health, only to be shocked by how little data she found. It wasn ’t just the topic of pain that was poorly researched. The lack of evidence was a problem she encountered time and time again, which is no surprise when you look at the research g...

Still experiencing post hysterectomy fatigue – Alison ’ s story
I am now 7 months 2 weeks after my hysterectomy and still experiencing debilitating post hysterectomy fatigue. I had an emergency procedure and was not well enough to have it having had such severe bleeding, anaemia and admissions for blood transfusions in the weeks preceding. I was kept in hospital again on a third trip to A and E to stabilise a very high temperature and to have a hysteroscopy after a few days of being monitored. I had been given Gonadotropin on my previous visit to hospital a week before and we were all waiting for this to take effect (to stop the bleeding) in order to have a hysterectomy in a couple of ...

Shock diagnosis of uterine cancer – Vicki ’ s story
My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999 aged 72 and died shortly afterwards as it had spread. I went to my doctor and asked if I could have some sort of screening. Despite the fact there was no other family history of any type of cancer, my doctor agreed. So, each year I went for a CA125 blood test and an ultrasound scan (internal and/or external). They found that I had a cyst on one ovary but it was a normal cyst. So every year, I went and everything seemed fine and the cyst remained normal – but had grown over the last couple of years. No-one seemed concerned and thought it would go down as I am now pos...

Hologic wins FDA nod, launches next-gen Omni hysteroscope
Hologic (NSDQ:HOLX) said today that it launched its next-gen Omni hysteroscope in the U.S. after having received FDA 510(k) clearance earlier in the month. The newly cleared Omni hysteroscope features a three-in-one modular scope and is intended for both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, the Marlborough, Mass.-based company said. “Experts agree that direct visualization of the uterine cavity in women with abnormal uterine bleeding is the gold standard that allows physicians to accurately identify and collect quality samples and remove pathology – in a safer and more effective manner than blind biopsy and cure...

A long time coming – Anne ’ s story
I got married aged 22 and, like many couples, we hoped to start a family when we were settled. So after a few years on the pill we decided to try for a baby. After a couple of years I went to my GP because there was no hint of a pregnancy. Then followed several years of visits to the gynae clinic in my local hospital, undergoing tests and infertility treatment, including surgery to unblock my Fallopian tubes and to remove ovarian cysts. My surgeon said that the way he had done it meant the tubes would not close up again. A dye test later proved this to be wrong. So eventually the only option was IVF which was still relativ...
