NY Motorist Rescued after 10 Hours in Car Buried by Snow Plow
By JIM MUSTIAN Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — A man who drove off the road in this week’s snowstorm spent 10 hours trapped in his car after a passing plow buried it, finally managing to get a 911 call through and being rescued in the nick of time by a New York state trooper. Kevin Kresen, 58, of Candor, drove off the road in the town of Owego and became “plowed in by a truck,” state police said. “If he was in there for another hour his body temperature would have gone lower, and I’m convinced he wouldn’t have made it,” State Police Sgt. Jason Cawley, who rescued the man, said in an in...

Scientists solve 100-year-old cerebral malaria mystery using neuroimaging techniques
(London School of Hygiene& Tropical Medicine) Scientists have shown for the first time that cerebral malaria causes death in adults by triggering oxygen-deprivation in the brain, in new research published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.Already available treatments, such as hypothermia, may slow brain oxygen-deprivation in cerebral malaria patients. The researchers say these neuronal survival-enhancing approaches could soon be trialled in adults with cerebral malaria, alongside existing anti-malarial treatments, to hopefully improve survival. 30 Endangered Sea Turtles From Cape Cod Waters Reach New Orleans For Further Treatment
BOSTON (CBS) — Thirty endangered sea turtles recused from Cape Cod beaches have reached New Orleans after a hiccup in their travel plans over Thanksgiving week. The Kemp’s ridley turtles are at the Audubon Nature Institute’s Coastal Wildlife Network after stopping in Tennessee. For weeks, the New England Aquarium and the National Marine Life Center cared for turtles, who were suffering from hypothermia and the inability to feed due to cold ocean temperatures, the organizations said. On Wednesday, pilots with Turtles Fly Too were transporting the turtles to New Orleans when they came across strong winds and st...

New England Aquarium Rescues Over 60 Stranded Turtles On Cape Cod Beaches
QUINCY (AP) — The onset of cold weather in New England has led to a surge of cold-stunned turtles becoming stranded on Cape Cod beaches, marine scientists said Thursday. The New England Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital in Quincy has taken in more than 40 turtles in the last two days alone, a large number in a short period of time. That brings to 66 the number of turtles that have already been treated at the aquarium. The turtles — Kemp’s ridleys, loggerheads, and leatherbacks — are treated for life-threatening medical conditions that are a result of weeks of hypothermia and the inability to feed. Once they’re...

Normothermia in patients with sepsis who present to emergency departments is associated with low compliance with sepsis bundles and increased in-hospital mortality rate
Objectives: To investigate the impact of normothermia on compliance with sepsis bundles and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis who present to emergency departments. Design(s): Retrospective multicenter observational study. Patient(s): Nineteen university-affiliated hospitals of the Korean Sepsis Alliance participated in this study. Data were collected regarding patients who visited emergency departments for sepsis during the 1-month period. The patients were divided into three groups based on their body temperature at the time of triage in the emergency department (i.e., hypothermia [ 38degreeC]). Intervention(s...

Metabolic adaptation to calorie restriction
In this study, we compared the global metabolic response to CR of mice housed at 22°C (the standard housing temperature) or at 30°C and found that thermoneutrality reverted 39 and 78% of total systemic or hypothalamic metabolic variations caused by CR, respectively. Systemic changes included pathways that control fuel use and energy expenditure during CR. Cognitive computing-assisted analysis of these metabolomics results helped to prioritize potential active metabolites that modulated the hypothermic response to CR. Last, we demonstrated with pharmacological approaches that nitric oxide (NO) produced through the c...
