Comparison of Classical and Green RPLC Methods in the Determination of pKa Values of Some Piperazine Group Antihistamines
In this study, protonation constant values and liquid chromatographic behaviors of hydrophobic cyclizine, chlorcyclizine, hydroxyzine, cinnarizine, cetirizine, meclizine, and buclizine in some water-organic solvent binary mixtures were examined for the first time using classical and green reverse phase liquid chromatography methods. In the isocratic study, the relationship of the retention time and mobile phase pH in water-organic solvent binary mixtures containing acetonitrile (45, 50, 55, 60, 65, v/v), methanol (60, 65, 70, 75, v/v) and ethanol (45, 50, 55, 56, 59, 60, 62, 65, v/v) were determined at 37 °C. In the study...

Dextrin-assisted gel electromembrane extraction of chiral drugs: Improving the extraction efficiency and investigation of enantioselectivity of extraction
Talanta. 2024 Apr 4;274:126016. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study investigates the use of dextrins (maltodextrin, β-cyclodextrin, and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) to improve the efficiency of the agarose-based gel electromembrane extraction technique for extracting chiral basic drugs (citalopram, hydroxyzine, and cetirizine). Additionally, it examines the enantioselectivity of the extraction process for these drugs. To achieve these, dextrins were incorporated into either the sample solution, the membrane, or the acceptor solution, and then the extraction procedure was p...

Prevalence of use of on-label and off-label psychotropics in the Greek pediatric population
With a global increased use of psychotropics in pediatrics, their off-label use is a concern due to uncertainty and risk. Data on psychotropics use in the Greek pediatric population do not exist to date. We analyzed retrospective data from the nationwide pharmacy claim database, to estimate the prevalence of psychotropics in pediatrics focusing on off-label use (March 2016-October 2019). In total 63,782 pediatric subjects had at least one identified psychotropic prescription. The prevalence of psychotropics use was 5.1–14.6/1,000 pediatric inhabitants. When excluding 42,508 subjects who received only short-time hydroxyzi...

Concomitant use of hydroxyzine and haloperidol did not worsen delirium in patients with cancer: A multicenter, retrospective, observational study
This study examined whether the concomitant use of hydroxyzine and haloperidol worsened delirium in patients with cancer.METHODS: This retrospective, observational study was conducted at 2 general hospitals in Japan. The medical records of patients with cancer who received haloperidol for delirium from July to December 2020 were reviewed. The treatments for delirium included haloperidol alone or haloperidol combined with hydroxyzine. The primary outcome was the duration from the first day of haloperidol administration to the resolution of delirium, defined as its absence for 2 consecutive days. The time to delirium resolut...

The Efficacy of Bepotastine Besilate Compared With Hydroxyzine Pamoate for Preventing Infusion Reactions to the First Dose of Rituximab in Patients With Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: Protocol for a Phase II, Double-Blind, Multicenter Randomized Trial
CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of oral first- and second-generation histamine H1-receptor antagonists in preventing IRs induced by the initial administration of rituximab. The findings from this study hold the potential to establish the rationale for a phase III study aimed at determining the standard premedication protocol for rituximab infusion.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Japan Registry of Clinical Trials jRCTs051220169; https://jrct.niph.go.jp/latest-detail/jRCTs051220169.INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): DERR1-10.2196/54882.PMID:38386393 | DOI:10.2196/54...

The Assessment and Management of Childhood Masturbation: An Analysis of 90 Cases
Conclusion Physicians may have difficulty identifying repetitive movements in CM. Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis may lead to unnecessary use of antiepileptic drugs, delayed initiation of treatment, and prolonged treatment duration. Video recordings are important in the differential diagnosis of CM. CM may have psychosocial causes and can often be effectively treated with behavioral therapy. Pharmacological treatment (hydroxyzine hydrochloride and risperidone) may be considered in cases that do not respond to behavioral treatment. Diagnosis and Treatment of Cirrhosis
To the Editor I believe that the recent Review about the diagnosis and management of cirrhosis wrongly promoted off-label use of hydroxyzine in its abstract by mentioning “[t]rials addressing symptoms of cirrhosis have demonstrated efficacy for hydroxyzine in improving sleep dysfunction….” (Source: JAMA)

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cirrhosis —Reply
In Reply Dr Braillon makes multiple important points about the recommendation of using hydroxyzine for sleep in patients with cirrhosis. Our Review focused on evidence-based therapies for patients with cirrhosis, and unfortunately, to date, trials of specific nonpharmacologic therapies for sleep disorders in the context of cirrhosis are lacking. However, in a recent article about contemporary management of pain in cirrhosis, we recommended nonpharmacologic interventions for sleep disorder. Sleep disorder in cirrhosis is also a complex topic with multiple contextual nuances, and the field is evolving. For example, lactulose...
