Sir Peter Harper obituary
Researcher into the genetics of neurological disorders whose work has provided hope for a cure for muscular dystrophyPeter Harper, who has died aged 81, was a world expert on the genetics of inherited neurological disorders, particularlyHuntington ’s disease andmuscular dystrophy. He also advocated the idea of genetic counselling – helping people to understand the implications of inherited disorders that might affect them and their families.Finding a genetic link between the two wasting conditions has led to highly accurate diagnostic and predictive tests for at-risk individuals and their families. Peter played a leadi...

New insight into protein structures that could treat Huntington's disease
(University of Groningen) In Huntington's disease, a faulty protein aggregates in brain cells and eventually kills them. Such protein aggregates could, in principle, be prevented with a heat shock protein. However, it is not well known how these proteins interact with the Huntington's disease protein. New research by Patrick van der Wel (University of Groningen) and colleagues at the University of Texas has partially resolved the structure of heat shock proteins that bind to such aggregating proteins. Insights into the role of DNA repair and Huntington's disease gene mutation open new avenues for drug discovery
(IOS Press) DNA repair is an important factor that determines how early or late Huntington's disease (HD) occurs in individuals who carry the expanded CAG repeat in the HTT gene that causes HD. This special issue of theJournal of Huntington's Disease is a compendium of new reviews on topics ranging from the discovery of somatic CAG repeat expansion in HD, to our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved and the development of potential new therapies targeting these mechanisms. NIH Director Francis Collins Is Fighting This Coronavirus While Preparing for the Next One
In May 2020, Dr. Francis Collins, the longtime head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was called to the White House to meet with Jared Kushner, the then President’s son-in-law and adviser, and Dr. Deborah Birx, the head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. A few weeks earlier, Congress had given the NIH $1.5 billion to try to speed up the process of developing new diagnostic tests for COVID-19, and the White House, which was dubious about increasing the rate of testing, wanted to know more about what the NIH was doing. Collins is technically the boss of Dr. Anthony Fauci, but during the pandemic he ha...

Researchers describe a molecular mechanism involved in the pathology's neurodegeneration
(University of Barcelona) Protein alteration in the family of lamins causes several diseases, known as laminopathies, such as progeria or precocious ageing. A study in which UB researchers have taken part states that alterations in the levels of one of these proteins, lamin B1, contribute to the degeneration of neuronal populations in Huntington's disease. Caused by a mutation in the huntingtin gen, this pathology features involuntary movements, cognitive deficit and psychiatric disorders, and has no cure yet.
