Psychoneuroimmunology in multiple myeloma and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant: Opportunities for research among patients and caregivers
Brain Behav Immun. 2024 Apr 19:S0889-1591(24)00366-0. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer and is the leading indication for autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). To be eligible for HSCT, a patient must have a caregiver, as caregivers play a central role in HSCT preparation and recovery. MM patients remain on treatment indefinitely, and thus patients and their caregivers face long-term challenges including the intensity of HSCT and perpetual therapy after transplant. Importantly, both patients and their caregivers show heightened dep...

Antimicrobial resistance and carbapenemase dissemination in < em > Pseudomonas aeruginosa < /em > isolates from Libyan hospitals: a call for surveillance and intervention
This study aimed to assess resistance of clinical isolates from Libyan hospitals to antipseudomonal antibiotics, the prevalence of selected extended-spectrum β-lactamases and carbapenemase genes among these isolates, and the microorganisms' capacity for alginate and biofilm production. Forty-five isolates were collected from four hospitals in Benghazi and Derna, Libya. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using agar disc diffusion. The presence of resistance genes (blaCTXM, blaTEM, blaSHV-1, blaGES-1, blaKPC, and blaNDM) was screened using PCR. Biofilm formation was quantified via the crystal violet assay, while al...

Multi-omics study reveals different pathogenesis of the generation of skin lesions in SLE and IDLE patients
J Autoimmun. 2024 Apr 20;146:103203. doi: 10.1016/j.jaut.2024.103203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLupus erythematosus (LE) is a heterogeneous, antibody-mediated autoimmune disease. Isolate discoid LE (IDLE) and systematic LE (SLE) are traditionally regarded as the two ends of the spectrum, ranging from skin-limited damage to life-threatening multi-organ involvement. Both belong to LE, but IDLE and SLE differ in appearance of skin lesions, autoantibody panels, pathological changes, treatments, and immunopathogenesis. Is discoid lupus truly a form of LE or is it a completely separate entity? This question has not been full...

Management and confusion in an elderly trauma patient
As the UK population continues to age, healthcare providers encounter a growing number of geriatric patients in most medical and surgical specialties. In the realm of orthopaedic care, this demographic  shift presents distinctive challenges, with delirium emerging as a prominent complicating factor of many orthopaedic admissions. Acute confusion or delirium frequently complicates the treatment of older trauma patients, significantly influencing hospital stays, requiring tailored interventions, an d negatively impacting overall recovery. A case of insulinoma misidentified as schizophrenia due to its manifestation in neuropsychiatric symptoms
AbstractInsulinomas can present with neuroglycopenic symptoms suggesting neuropsychiatric disorders, delaying diagnosis and treatment. We recently treated a 65-year-old woman with insulinoma who was misdiagnosed at her nearby psychiatric clinic as having schizophrenia because of personality changes and memory impairment; she was treated with brexpiprazole, which was discontinued due to persistence of the symptoms. Despite her relatively low casual plasma glucose (70  mg/dL), the physician at the psychiatric clinic did not investigate the possibility of hypoglycemia, partly because her HbA1c level (5.2%) was within normal ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1888: Dragon & rsquo;s Blood-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Rapid Hemostasis and Antibacterial Activity
In this study, different amounts of DB were loaded on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to prepare a series of DB-MSN composites (5DB-MSN, 10DB-MSN, and 20DB-MSN). DB-MSN could quickly release DB and activate the intrinsic blood coagulation cascade simultaneously by DB and MSN. Hemostasis tests demonstrated that DB-MSN showed superior hemostatic effects than either DB or MSNs alone, and 10DB-MSN exhibited the best hemostatic effect. In addition, the antibacterial activities of DB-MSN against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) improved with the increase in DB. Furthermore, the hemolysis as...
