Management of Desmoid Disease in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
Clin Colon Rectal Surg. 2023 Jul 25;37(3):185-190. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1770731. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTDesmoid disease, though technically a benign condition, is nevertheless a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Desmoid disease impacts approximately 30% of FAP patients, with several known risk factors. It runs the gamut in terms of severity-ranging from small, slow-growing asymptomatic lesions to large, focally destructive, life-threatening masses. Desmoids usually occur following surgery, and several patient risk factors have been established, including fe...

Musculoskeletal and cardiovascular considerations for transgender athletes
Phys Sportsmed. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.1080/00913847.2024.2342230. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParticipation in athletics is essential for the overall well-being of transgender athletes and should be included as part of gender-affirming care. Surveys show physicians and athletic trainers want to provide appropriate care for transgender athletes but lack the proper knowledge and training to do so. Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT) is part of gender-affirming care, yet the effects of GAHT on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health of transgender athletes is not well-understood. The purpose of this review was to d...

Impact of Distinct Anti-Androgen Exposures on the Plasma Metabolome in Feminizing Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest an anti-atherogenic signature in the plasma metabolome after the first six months of feminizing GAHT, with cyproterone acetate also reducing specific plasma amino acids. This study provides novel insight into the metabolic changes occurring across feminizing GAHT.PMID:38609170 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae226 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Musculoskeletal and cardiovascular considerations for transgender athletes
CONCLUSION: Exercise is essential for the well-being of transgender individuals and special considerations regarding the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health of transgender athletes should be incorporated into standard medical education. Educational programs for transgender patients and their support team should focus on preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of adverse musculoskeletal and cardiovascular events. The PPE is an invaluable tool available to physicians to monitor the health and safety of transgender athletes and should be regularly updated as research on the health of transgender indiv...

Global representativeness and impact of funding sources in cost-effectiveness research on systemic therapies for advanced breast cancer: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Breast cancer CE literature scarcely represents low-and-middle-income countries' perspectives and is influenced by pharmaceutical industry funding which targets European countries', frequently utilizes comparisons within same-drug class, and is more likely to have favorable conclusions.PMID:38603837 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103727 (Source: Breast)

Detection of Adenocarcinoma of the Colon on 18F-Fluciclovine PET/CT
Clin Nucl Med. 2024 Apr 5. doi: 10.1097/RLU.0000000000005218. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn 85-year-old man with prostate cancer and de novo bone metastases was treated with hormonal therapy with resolution of bone lesions, improved primary disease, and improved serum tumor markers. Although on hormonal therapy, biochemical recurrence prompted performance of 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT. Fluciclovine PET/CT revealed primary prostate cancer progression with incidental note of avid foci in the colon for which colonoscopy was recommended. Colonoscopy with biopsy was performed with pathology revealing primary colon adenocarcinom...

Gender-affirming hormone therapy and cardiovascular health in transgender adults
Climacteric. 2024 Apr 10:1-9. doi: 10.1080/13697137.2024.2310518. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA growing number of people identify as transgender and gender non-binary in the USA and worldwide. Concomitantly, an increasing number of patients are receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) to achieve gender congruence. GAHT has far-ranging effects on clinical and subclinical markers of cardiovascular risk. Transgender patients also appear to be at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases compared to their cisgender peers and the impact of gender-affirming therapy on cardiovascular health is unclear. Studies on the eff...
