Probation due to HIPAA violation
Hello everyone I am a 3rd year FM Resident about to be graduating in June. I had a pretty smooth sailing so far and even passed my ABFM board exam. So, earlier in May I got called by our GME director saying I was found to be guilty of HIPAA violation as I had accessed my wife's medical records. At that time, I did say that my wife knew about it and apologized profusely if it was a HIPAA violation. He then said they have a pretty strict hipaa violation policy due to a previous incident and... Probation due to HIPAA violation (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Personal Statement and HIPAA
Hi! Just a quick question about my personal statement. I write about my brother in my personal statement and describe a time where he had to be admitted to a hospital. Am I breaking HIPAA by using his name? I thought not because he’s a sibling/someone I know personally, not a patient I met in a clinical setting. Any ideas? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transmitting STEMI EKGs pre hospital
Trying to do some research for my local group. Anyone out there transmitting ekgs prehospital from medics to hospital either via phone or computer? Does it go to your cardiologists as well? For the EMS junkies, do you have any companies to check out that are HIPAA compliant and economical? How well does it work for those out there who are doing this? Pushback from the medics? Seems the tech is easily available but we're struggling to get it implemented locally. Thanks! Sent from my... Transmitting STEMI EKGs pre hospital (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Celebrity Patients
I know about HIPAA, blah blah blah. But generally if anyone worked in a clinical setting and a person walks in who is a celebrity, do healthcare and administrative workers treat him/her differently? Sorry, sounds like a random question but I was watching a documentary about how a celebrity teen popstar was once hospitalized, cussing at nurses, etc. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Behavior therapist and clinical experience
I'm currently working as a behavior interventionist. I work with autistic children and try to reinforce their good behaviors using ABA so that they can become functional in society. I have to abide by HIPAA when I'm working with my clients and I'm also learning quite a bit about Psychiatry. Will this count as clinical experience on my app? I do have clinical experience in the traditional setting (300hrs hospital volunteering + 50hrs shadowing). (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Trump and Hipaa
I could have sworn I read an article a few months ago about trump wanting to loosen the hipaa regulation on psychiatrists , and allow them to report their patients mental health to specific organizations and so on. Anyone remember this too ? Any links or stuff I can read up more about what happened . Thanks Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Terminated from Residency - advice needed
Long time lurker but haven't posted much. Here is my story: I was about to finish PGY2 Family Medicine Residency when I was terminated for a HIPAA/compliance violation. What occurred was, that I had contacted a patient via phone on a rotation (thinking the patient was mine) prior to an appointment with Occupational Medicine. We had a short discussion about medical history over the phone (what I had gleaned from EPIC). I quickly realized I had no business reason to speak to the patient, so I... Things you wish old people knew
I have been tasked with giving a talk to my Dad's old folks breakfast group in the morning. I figure I will mix HIPAA compliant funny stories with actual helpful hints for old people to know about the ED. I'm thinking about covering good chief complaints to come by ambulance vs POV, things that are OK for urgent care, etc. What do you guys wish old people knew about the ED? Cannot Find Doctor to Shadow
I am looking for a doctor to shadow. I asked my primary care physician and he said that students cannot simply ask to shadow a physician. He claims that paperwork must be filled out regarding HIPAA and that students have to apply to shadow physicians through college programs. However, I see that many people on this forum were able to call doctors offices. Should I just start calling doctor's offices? Is there any paperwork I need to fill out in order to shadow? Is this a HIPAA violation?
I know someone that has been taking pictures and posting on social media of patients he's observed surgeries on. I did confront him once about it and that person said the patient signed a waiver allowing documentation such as pictures (this is an academic institution). I don't believe that this allows pictures of sedated patients or pics of aborted fetus to end up on social media (yes this actually happened). I actually know this person very well and don't want it to get traced back to me,... Is this a HIPAA violation? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Some silly rant
Have you ever felt any one of the frustration I have had? When you contact volunteer organizations and they never call you back so that you have to call them, and they tell you to wait more only for you to call them again? When almost all clinics you called don't need volunteer? When those same clinics you called don't want you for doctor shadowing because of "HIPAA this and that"? When the hospitals you know only accept 6 month~1 year volunteers? Basically, you want to help some people... Some silly rant (Source: Student Doctor Network)
