Using names in Personal Statement
I am not so much referring too full names, locations, etc. However more so am referring too maybe a first name. I have seen arguments for both sides. making sure you are not violating HIPAA is obviously important. However I have also been told you want your personal statement to be a narrative or a story that adcoms members would enjoy reading, and including more personal information like a first name would help create a story. Any thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would this be a HIPAA violation?
Hi friends, I just want to get your opinion on something. I work at my uncle's medical practice every summer and have access to our EHR system that also goes with the hospital system. I was invited to do a research project this summer with two physicians at the hospital and they have asked me to use my own log-in for the research to collect data. Obviously, as a medical student and general non-terrible person, I want this to be as above-board as possible and I don't want to break any... Would this be a HIPAA violation? Where do missing IV bags go?
Don't you love it when a nurse calls 30min before an IV is due and says there are no bags left and the dose is needed right now, even though you sent up 3 days supply yesterday? Where do these big heavy IV bags with HIPAA info on the labels go?? The trash, in a drawer somewhere, lost in the back of the fridge forever, someone's lunch bag? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

HIPAA violation in school
Anyone know what happens if you violate HIPAA during pharmacy school? Is it just a failure of the class or an expulsion? Not planning on doing so, I’m just curious. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Probation due to HIPAA violation
Hello everyone I am a 3rd year FM Resident about to be graduating in June. I had a pretty smooth sailing so far and even passed my ABFM board exam. So, earlier in May I got called by our GME director saying I was found to be guilty of HIPAA violation as I had accessed my wife's medical records. At that time, I did say that my wife knew about it and apologized profusely if it was a HIPAA violation. He then said they have a pretty strict hipaa violation policy due to a previous incident and... Probation due to HIPAA violation (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Personal Statement and HIPAA
Hi! Just a quick question about my personal statement. I write about my brother in my personal statement and describe a time where he had to be admitted to a hospital. Am I breaking HIPAA by using his name? I thought not because he’s a sibling/someone I know personally, not a patient I met in a clinical setting. Any ideas? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transmitting STEMI EKGs pre hospital
Trying to do some research for my local group. Anyone out there transmitting ekgs prehospital from medics to hospital either via phone or computer? Does it go to your cardiologists as well? For the EMS junkies, do you have any companies to check out that are HIPAA compliant and economical? How well does it work for those out there who are doing this? Pushback from the medics? Seems the tech is easily available but we're struggling to get it implemented locally. Thanks! Sent from my... Transmitting STEMI EKGs pre hospital (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Celebrity Patients
I know about HIPAA, blah blah blah. But generally if anyone worked in a clinical setting and a person walks in who is a celebrity, do healthcare and administrative workers treat him/her differently? Sorry, sounds like a random question but I was watching a documentary about how a celebrity teen popstar was once hospitalized, cussing at nurses, etc. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Behavior therapist and clinical experience
I'm currently working as a behavior interventionist. I work with autistic children and try to reinforce their good behaviors using ABA so that they can become functional in society. I have to abide by HIPAA when I'm working with my clients and I'm also learning quite a bit about Psychiatry. Will this count as clinical experience on my app? I do have clinical experience in the traditional setting (300hrs hospital volunteering + 50hrs shadowing). (Source: Student Doctor Network)
