Deroofing: A Practical Guide for the Dermatologist
AbstractPurpose of ReviewHidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory skin condition marked by significant structural changes such as nodules, abscesses, and subcutaneous tunnels, often accompanied by drainage and pain. Medical treatment alone usually does not suffice for optimal disease control. Therefore, surgical interventions, particularly for moderate-to-severe cases with tunnel formation, are a crucial adjunct to medical therapy. This paper aims to outline a practical approach to deroofing in hidradenitis suppurativa, covering the necessary materials, surgical approach, wound care, common complications, and fre...

Efficacy and Durability of Intravenous Ertapenem Therapy for Recalcitrant Hidradenitis Suppurativa
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this retrospective review of medical records and telephone survey, treating HS with intravenous ertapenem, administered for a mean of 13 weeks, was associated with improvement in clinical and inflammatory markers, as well as heightened patient satisfaction. Nonetheless, this approach should be monitored for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance given a longer than standard treatment course.PMID:38353987 | PMC:PMC10867774 | DOI:10.1001/jamadermatol.2023.6201 (Source: Pain Physician)

Balancing Ertapenem Therapy in Recalcitrant Hidradenitis Suppurativa With Antibiotic Stewardship
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an often-overlooked, painful inflammatory condition associated with substantial physical, psychological, and social impairments, profoundly affecting the quality of life for individuals with the condition. The progress of drug development for HS has been impeded, partly due to a limited understanding of the condition. Despite 2 HS treatments approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and various off-label options, a uniformly effective therapeutic solution for HS remains elusive. (Source: JAMA Dermatology)

Dietas populares y su impacto en la piel. Una revisi ón narrativa
Actas Dermosifiliogr. 2024 Feb 7:S0001-7310(24)00089-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ad.2023.10.044. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNumerous diets for losing weight, building strength, and managing a range of cardiovascular, neurologic, and skin diseases have become popular in recent years. The ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting in particular have shown promising results in clinical and sports medicine. The Mediterranean diet, in turn, is widely recognized for its numerous health benefits. Also popular are the paleo diet and vegan and gluten-free diets. Positive effects on inflammatory conditions, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatiti...

Population pharmacokinetic modeling of oral brepocitinib in healthy volunteers and patients with immuno ‐inflammatory diseases
The objective of this population pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis was to characterize the concentration –time profile of brepocitinib plasma concentration after single- and multiple-oral administration in healthy volunteers (HVs) and patients with immuno-inflammatory diseases. Blood samples from phase I HV and phase II clinical studies of patients with alopecia areata, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis , ulcerative colitis (UC), vitiligo, and hidradenitis suppurativa were analyzed using a nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach. Effects of patients' characteristics on brepocitinib exposure were investigated. Overall, 8552 br...

Review of Scoring Systems for Hidradenitis Suppurativa
This article provides a chronological overview of HS grading scales to aid in the understanding and comparison of different scoring systems. A literature review of articles published in English on PubMed was conducted searched from 1989 to 2023. The review includes 15 scores that are the most relevant and widely used and acknowledges the existence of over 30 scoring systems for HS. The expanding landscape of HS scoring systems presents challenges when patients evaluated using different systems are compared. A universally accepted scoring system is required for consistent application across diverse populations. A comprehens...
