Worm infestation in intestine has a remote effect on viral defenses
(University of Bonn) Infection with parasitic intestinal worms (helminths) can apparently cause sexually transmitted viral in-fections to be much more severe elsewhere in the body. This is shown by a study led by the Universities of Cape Town and Bonn. According to the study, helminth-infected mice developed significantly more severe symptoms after infection with a genital herpes viruses (Herpes Simplex Virus). The researchers suspect that these results can also be transferred to humans. The results have now appeared in the journal Cell Host& Microbe. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

First patient-derived organoid model for cervical cancer
(Hubrecht Institute) Researchers from the group of Hans Clevers developed the first patient-derived organoid model for cervical cancer. They also modelled the healthy human cervix using organoids. The researchers used the platform to study sexually transmitted infections for a herpes virus. The model can potentially also be used to study human papillomavirus (HPV), which is one of the main causes of cervical cancer. The results will be published in Cell Stem Cell on the 13th of April, 2021. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Differences in herpes virus symptoms may relate to variations in strain gene expression
(Penn State) Why do some people with cold sores around their lips experience painful lesions, while others have no symptoms at all, yet still spread the virus? A new study conducted at Penn State finds that these differences could be due to variations in the way certain strains of herpes simplex (HSV-1) -- the virus that causes cold sores, as well as genital herpes -- activate gene expression in neurons. What is a Lipschultz Ulcer?
Discussion Acute genital ulcers (AGU) are much less common in sexually-naive women than sexually experienced or active women. The differential diagnosis of AGU is large. For sexually active women Herpes simplex virus is the most common cause. Sexually transmitted infections are also included in this differential. In addition to the pain, AGUs can cause distress for the patient and family as possible sexual abuse must be considered. The differential diagnosis of AGU in non-sexually active women includes: Aphthosis Lipschutz ulcer Idiopathic Autoimmune or inflammatory diseases Behcet disease Bullous pemphigoid Inflammato...

T cells linked to myelin implicated in MS-like disease in monkeys
(Oregon Health& Science University) Scientists have uncovered new clues implicating a type of herpes virus as the cause of a central nervous system disease in monkeys that's similar to multiple sclerosis in people. By linking two specific T cells to the loss of myelin, scientists say the new study opens the possibility of developing an antiviral therapy that could be especially useful for newly diagnosed cases of multiple sclerosis. Development of a new method for decoding viral genes
(The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo) A research team led by Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi of the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo, developed a new decoding method for viral genes that can easily and quickly obtain even non-canonical genetic information. Using this new decoding method, they identified nine novel proteins encoded by herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) and found that one of them, piUL49, is a pathogenic factor that specifically controls the onset of herpes encephalitis .
