Microscopy deep learning predicts viral infections
(University of Zurich) When viruses infect cells, changes in the cell nucleus occur, and these can be observed through fluorescence microscopy. Using fluorescence images from live cells, researchers at the University of Zurich have trained an artificial neural network to reliably recognize cells that are infected by adenoviruses or herpes viruses. The procedure also identifies severe acute infections at an early stage. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

Researchers reveal the inner workings of a viral DNA-packaging motor
(Duke University) In a trio of papers, researchers have discovered the detailed inner workings of the molecular motor that packages genetic material into double-stranded DNA viruses. The advance provides insight into a critical step in the reproduction cycle of viruses such as pox-, herpes- and adeno-viruses. It could also give inspiration to researchers creating microscopic machines based on naturally occurring biomotors. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

DRDO's antiviral drug 2-DG unlikely to get quick nod for Covid treatment
Experts said the 2-DG drug had earlier been considered for treatment of influenza, way back in 1959, and subsequently for other infectious diseases such as Herpes. However, most of these studies were conducted in laboratories and there isn ’t much real world evidence on the drug’s efficacy, infectious disease experts that ET spoke to said. Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Have Come to the U.S. Will They Work?
“Our Mosquito Project Takes Flight,” reads a baby-blue billboard off US-1 in the Florida Keys, alongside an image of an insect tracing a path in the shape of a heart. Sponsored by the local mosquito control board and U.K.-based biotech firm Oxitec, the ad promotes a contentious plan to release millions of genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes here to test a new method of bioengineered pest control. It’s the first-ever such experiment in the United States, and one that has turned this chain of sun-soaked island communities into a battleground over scientific truth, government authority, and humanit...

Worm infestation in intestine has a remote effect on viral defenses
(University of Bonn) Infection with parasitic intestinal worms (helminths) can apparently cause sexually transmitted viral in-fections to be much more severe elsewhere in the body. This is shown by a study led by the Universities of Cape Town and Bonn. According to the study, helminth-infected mice developed significantly more severe symptoms after infection with a genital herpes viruses (Herpes Simplex Virus). The researchers suspect that these results can also be transferred to humans. The results have now appeared in the journal Cell Host& Microbe. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
