Overview of F18-FDG uptake patterns in retroperitoneal pathologies: imaging findings, pitfalls, and artifacts
ConclusionRetroperitoneal pathologies can be complex, ranging from oncologic to a spectrum of non-oncologic disorders. While crosse-sectional imaging (CT and MRI) are often the initial imaging modalities to localize and characterize pathologies, metabolic information provided by F18-FDG PET/CT can change the management and clinical outcome in many cases.Graphical abstract(a) Brown fat activation on F18-FDG PET. Axial fused PET image of the abdomen shows hypermetabolic foci in the bilateral perinephric fat (arrows). (b) Adrenal metastasis in a 78-year-old woman with serous ovarian carcinoma. Metabolomic Analysis of Human Cirrhosis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Pilot Study
ConclusionOur findings give promising insides into the metabolic changes during HCC carcinogenesis and provide candidate biomarkers for future studies. Campesterol and furoylglycine in particular were identified as possible biomarkers for HCC progression. Moreover, eight metabolites were detected as predictors for poor overall survival.Graphical Abstract (Source: Digestive Diseases and Sciences)

Surgical management of renal cell carcinoma with subhepatic inferior vena cava tumor thrombus: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionOpen surgery is a safe and efficient way to treat renal cell carcinoma involving the renal vein and inferior vena cava. It is superior to other therapeutic modalities. When properly done it provides acceptable long time survival and good quality of life to patients. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1624: Effects of Short-Term Lenvatinib Administration Prior to Transarterial Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Conclusions: The short-term LEN-TACE is feasible and safe, demonstrating promising outcomes with a high CR ratio, contributing to lipiodol retention in the tumor after cTACE, and extended PFS. To confirm the advantages of this treatment protocol, a prospective clinical trial is mandatory. (Source: Cancers)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1618: A Multicenter International Retrospective Investigation Assessing the Prognostic Role of Inflammation-Based Scores (Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte, Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte, and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratios) in Patients with Intermediate-Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Undergoing Chemoembolizations of the Liver
Conclusions: This study highlights the prognostic value of inflammation-based scores, particularly LMR and NLR, in predicting the treatment response and short-term outcomes of patients with intermediate-stage HCC undergoing TACE. Future investigations should focus on validating these scores’ clinical applicability and assessing their impact on long-term patient survival and therapeutic decision-making. (Source: Cancers)

Progress in cancer research on the regulator of phagocytosis CD47, which determines the fate of tumor cells (Review)
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 9;27(6):256. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14389. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTCluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) is a transmembrane protein that is widely and moderately expressed on the surface of various cells and can have an essential role in mediating cell proliferation, migration, phagocytosis, apoptosis, immune homeostasis and other related responses by binding to its ligands, integrins, thrombospondin-1 and signal regulatory protein α. The poor prognosis of cancer patients is closely associated with high expression of CD47 in glioblastoma, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, colon cancer a...

A new benzoquinone and a new stilbenoid from < em > Paphiopedilum exul < /em > (Ridl.) Rolfe
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 22:1-9. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2344196. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOne new alkyl benzoquinone, paphionone (1), one new trans-stilbenoid, (E)-6,5'-dihydroxy-2,3'-dimethoxystilbene (2), and eight known stilbenoids and flavonoids (3-10) were isolated from the leaves and roots of Paphiopedilum exul (Orchidaceae). Their chemical structures were determined based on IR, ECD, MS and NMR analyses. Cytotoxicity of all isolated compounds towards human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell line was examined in vitro by MTT assay. The para-hydroxybenzyl substituted stilbene 10 was potently cytotoxic to the...

Single is not combined: the role of Co and Ni bioavailability on toxicity mechanisms in liver and brain cells
In this study, we focused on the treatment of liver carcinoma (HepG2) and astrocytoma (CCF-STTG1) cells as a model for the target sites of these two metals. We investigated their effects in single and combined exposure on cell survival, cell death mechanisms, bioavailability, and the induction of oxidative stress. The combination of CoCl2 and NiCl2 resulted in higher Co levels with subsequent decreased amount of Ni compared to the individual treatment. Only CoCl2 and the combination of both metals led to RONS induction and increased GSSG formation, while apoptosis and necrosis seem to be involved in the cell death mechanis...

The emerging therapies are reshaping the first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Compared with sorafenib and lenvatinib, combination therapies based on ICIs significantly improved the prognosis of advanced HCC and demonstrated similar safety. At the same time, the optimal treatment approach should be tailored to individual patient characteristics, such as etiology, tumor staging, and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels. With lower incidence rates of treatment-related adverse events and non-inferior efficacy compared to sorafenib, ICI monotherapies should be prioritized as a first-line treatment approach for patients who are not suitable candidates for ICI-combined therapies.TRIAL REGISTRATION: P...
